Wildcats fall to Thunderbirds on final day of Beehive Classic

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Weber State softball closed out the Beehive Classic with a 3-2 loss and 3-1 loss to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.Â
Game One: Southern Utah 3, Weber State 2
Weber State opened the scoring in the second inning when Kiaira Smith walked and advanced to third on a double by Sammy Gallegos. Jordan McMahon then singled to third base, driving in Kiaira Smith and giving Weber State a 1-0 lead.Â
In the third inning, Southern Utah tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly that allowed the Thunderbirds to score after reaching on an error.Â
The Wildcats regained the lead in the fourth inning. McMahon tripled to shallow left field, and Victoria Rey's infield sacrifice bunt, coupled with an error by Southern Utah, allowed McMahon to score, making it 2-1.Â
Southern Utah sealed the win in the seventh inning. After Thunderbirds Knight and Ollison reached base, Salvatierra walked with the bases loaded, scoring DelaCruz. A sacrifice fly by Becerra brought Knight home for the walk-off victory.Â
Raina Navarro delivered a solid performance in the circle, pitching five innings and allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out three batters. RJ Parra entered in relief, pitching 1.2 innings, during which four hits and two earned runs were surrendered, along with two walks and one strikeout.Â
McMahon led Weber State, collecting three hits and driving in one run, including a triple. Taegan Smith contributed with two hits in four at-bats, and Rey added an RBI and recorded a hit.
Game Two: Southern Utah 3, Weber State 1
Weber State opened the game with an early lead against Southern Utah. In the first inning, Rey walked and advanced to second base on a groundout. Apollonia Maldonado then singled to center field, driving in Rey for the first run. Sadie Kirk doubled, moving Maldonado to third, but the inning ended without further scoring. Weber State led 1-0 after one inning.
The game remained quiet until the sixth inning when Southern Utah's offense broke through. The Thunderbirds Ollison hit a triple, scoring Knight from first base. A fielding error on a sacrifice bunt allowed Ollison to score and Salvatierra to reach second. A single by Ramirez brought in Salvatierra, giving Southern Utah a 3-1 advantage by the end of the sixth inning.
Southern Utah then held Weber State scoreless in the final inning, securing a 3-1 victory.
Cali McCraw pitched a complete game for Weber State, throwing six innings and allowing six hits while conceding three runs, two of which were earned. McCraw did not walk any batters and struck out two.
Rey reached base twice, drawing two walks and scoring a run. McMahon recorded one hit in four plate appearances, advancing a runner. Kirk contributed offensively with a double and one walk, finishing with one hit in three plate appearances.
