Wildcats split home opening series with LMU

OGDEN - The Weber State softball team dropped a game one 9-2 decision to the Loyola Marymount Lions but bounced back with a 4-2 win in game two on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Field.
Game One: LMU 9, Weber State 2
Weber State struck first in the opening inning when Sadie Kirk delivered an RBI single to score Jordan McMahon and give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. After Loyola Marymount responded with a two-run home run in the fourth, Weber State answered back in the bottom half of the inning as Sienna Solis drove in a run to tie the game at 2-2.
The game remained tight into the later innings before the Lions took the lead in the sixth on a solo home run. Loyola Marymount then broke things open in the seventh inning, capitalizing on errors and timely extra-base hits to score six runs and pull away for the 9-2 win.
Kirk led the Wildcats at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance and an RBI, while Solis added a hit and an RBI. Apollonia Maldonado and Jordan Hart also contributed hits as Weber State totaled five on the day.
In the circle, Raina Navarro took the loss after working into the seventh inning, with R.J. Parra coming on in relief.
Game Two: Weber State 4, LMU 2
Loyola Marymount took an early lead with runs in the second and fourth innings, putting the Wildcats behind 2-0 midway through the game. Weber State responded in the fifth inning when Solis delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit in half.
The Wildcats broke through in the sixth inning with a three-run rally. McMahon and Victoria Rey each reached base to set the stage before Abby Grundy cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple to give Weber State its first lead of the day. Maldonado followed with an RBI groundout to extend the advantage to 4-2 and secure the victory.Â
Weber State tallied 10 hits in the contest, led by McMahon's three-hit performance. Rey added two hits, while Grundy finished with two RBI and Solis and Maldonado each drove in a run.
In the circle, Cali McCraw turned in a strong complete-game effort, allowing just three hits and two runs, while striking out one to earn the win.
Keeping up with the 'Cats
