OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State softball team just missed on an upset bid against league-leading Portland State in the final game of a four-game series at Wildcat Field on Saturday afternoon, as the Vikings held on for a 3-2 lead. PSU claimed a 14-6 win in Saturday's opener to make it a four-game sweep of the Wildcats.
In the first game of the day, Portland State capitalized on six Weber State errors to score 7 unearned runs. Five unearned runs were pushed across in the first inning alone, as the Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
PSU scored four more times in the second inning to blow the game open, offsetting an RBI double by Britinie Hardine in the top of the inning to lead 9-1.
The Wildcats trailed 12-1 entering the fifth inning, but posted a five-run rally to keep their hopes alive. Heather Jackson, Ariel Whiteman and Marqi Gray provided RBI hits in the inning.
The rally kept the game from being called after four-and-a-half innings on the run rule, but another pair of runs by Portland State in the bottom of the inning ended the game in the fifth.
In the second game, Portland State jumped on BreAnn Jones in the first inning, scoring three times for another early lead.
Jackson doubled home Linnea Ketcher and London Clarke in the third inning to cut the lead to 3-2. The Wildcats left six runners on base over the final four innings, including three in a bases-loaded situation in the fifth, as Portland State held on for the victory.
The Wildcats dropped to 1-45 overall on the season and 1-15 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play. The Vikings, meanwhile improved to 14-2 in conference play and moved to .500 overall on the season at 24-24.
Ketcher had a great series for Weber State against the Vikings, hitting .700 over the four games with a double, a triple, four stolen bases and four runs scored. Aubri Chiquete hit .375 in the series, while Jackson hit .364 with a team-high four RBI.
