SALT LAKE CITY -- The Weber State men's tennis duo of Simon Unger and Oliver Good won four-straight matches over the last two days to earn the doubles championship at the University of Utah Intercollegiates tournament at the Eccles Tennis Center.
The pair finished off their impressive run and claimed the title with an 8-5 win over the No. 1-seeded team of Ace Matias and Alejandro Medenilla of Utah.
"I'm really proud of the way Simon and Oliver played this week," said WSU head coach Jared Burnham. "They played some really good teams to get through this draw, and they were up to the task each time they took the court.
"We've been so close in this tournament before in doubles, having made the finals on multiple occasions, and not won, so it was pretty cool to see us get this one today."
Unger and Good opened the tournament with an 8-4 win over Nate Bellam and Curran Wearmouth of Utah State, before cruising to an 8-2 win over Utah's Dmytro Mamedov and Ben Tasevac to reach the semifinals.
In the semis, the Wildcat duo posted an 8-6 victory over the No. 2 seeded team in the tournament, Francis Spencer and Spencer Smith of BYU.
In singles play, the Wildcats struggled a bit early, dropping six of their nine opening round matches, but WSU turned things around in the back draw as Unger and Caio Poitena advanced to face each other in the consolation finals. Poitena earned the victory and the back draw championship with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 win.
Peter Ramstromer-Pello, Dave Hintze and Good each won their opening round matches for Weber State in the main singles draw, but the each of the three were eliminated in the round of 16.
