OREM, Utah – The Weber State University softball team came tantalizingly close to earning a split with in-state rival Utah Valley on Tuesday afternoon, but came up just short.

Holding a 2-0 lead with two-outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats surrendered two runs and then fell 3-2 in eight innings to the Wolverines at Wolverine Field. Utah Valley took the first game of the day 7-1.

Weber State (8-37 overall) got eight hits across the two games, with three players recording multiple hits.

Junior right hander Jasmine Ioane had two hits, bot doubles, while junior shortstop Brooke Silva also had two hits, including a double. Freshman left fielder Rudi Barrios had two singles, and RBI and a run scored.

Junior catcher Desiree Mejia had just one hit, but it was a big one as she hit her first career home run to left center, a solo shot that put the Wildcats ahead 2-0 in the second game. Sophomore designated player Stephanie Mathias also recorded a hit, and was hit by pitch three times. Mathias has been hit by pitch 17 times season, the most in a single-season by a Weber State player.

Weber State took a 1-0 lead in the second game after a throwing error by Utah Valley's catcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt by freshman third baseman Alyson Kulp allowed Barrios to cross the plate.

The Wildcats went up 2-0 on Mejia's home run in the sixth, but the Wolverines brought in two runners on a two-out single in the bottom half of the inning to tie things up at 2-2, and then claimed the win in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out single to right field that scored the winning run.

In the first game, Weber State fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and couldn't catch up. The Wildcats' lone run of the game came in the fourth inning when Barrios' RBI single scored redshirt freshman pinch runner Kyralyn Kawasaki.

Weber State will wrap up its 2013 season this weekend with a three-game Big Sky Conference series against Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Friday, with a second game to follow, and the series – and season finale – for the Wildcats will get underway at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
