OGDEN, Utah – Solid pitching, big hits, bigger catches
The Wildcats did a little of everything on Friday afternoon.
The Weber State University softball team pounded out 24 hits and held in-state and Big Sky Conference rival Southern Utah to just two unearned runs as the Wildcats swept both ends of a doubleheader, winning 7-0 and 8-2 at Wildcat Softball Field.
Freshman second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff, senior center fielder Malia Campos, and sophomore right fielder Sara Hingsberger each recorded two hits across the two games, combining forces to score seven of the Wildcats' 15 runs.
Senior right-hander MaCauley Flint (9-5) threw a complete-game shutout to open the day, allowing just one hit and two walks against five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Freshman right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling picked up her seventh win of the year in relief during the second game, allowing just one hit and two walks against five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.
“We put together two good games today,” Weber State coach Mary Kay Amicone said. “MaCauley threw great out and our defense was outstanding. Our outfielders made three amazing catches and we hit the ball very well. Malia and Sara had fantastic performances, both offensively and defensively.
“In the second game (junior right-hander Sierra Whitmer) and Kirty combined for eight strikeouts and we punched back every time they score. Our focus and intensity was very good today.”
Weber State recorded 12 hits in both games, and used blow-up innings in both games to open things up.
During the first game, it came in the third inning, when the Wildcats recorded seven of their 12 hits and scoring six runs to take a 6-0 lead.
In the second game, it came in the fifth with the game tied at 2-2, as the Wildcats pounded out five hits and capitalized on two Thunderbird errors to open up a five-run lead.
By capturing its 28th overall win in the second game, Weber State (9-2 Big Sky, 28-13 overall) also clinched its first winning season during the new era of Wildcat softball, and was the 50th win for Amicone since taking over the program prior to the 2014 season.
Weber State and Southern Utah (4-7 Big Sky, 12-24 overall) will wrap up their three-game league series on Saturday at Noon. The game is Weber State's annual 'Live Pink, Bleed Purple' game in honor of breast cancer awareness.
