Wildcat soccer falls to Arizona State

9/17/2017 11:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer

TEMPE, Ariz. – After a valiant opening half, the Wildcats simply ran out of gas under the unforgiving Arizona sun.

Despite holding their opponent scoreless in the opening half for the sixth time in eight matches this season, the Weber State University women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Stadium.

With temperatures in the upper 90s, the Wildcats (1-7-0) battled the Sun Devils (3-4-1) to a draw in the opening 45 minutes, with Arizona State taking a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute.

Weber State continued to battle ASU despite the one-goal disadvantage, but things fell apart for the Wildcats over a four-minute span between the 76th and 80th minutes as the Sun Devils found the back of the net three additional times for the final four-goal margin.

While the match was a disappointing finish to an aggressive non-conference schedule, a lineup that included No. 1 UCLA and three NCAA qualifiers from 2016, it also means that a fresh start is at hand as Weber State moves into the Big Sky Conference portion of its schedule this weekend at Northern Colorado and North Dakota.

The Wildcats will face the Bears at 7 p.m. on Friday in Greeley, Colo., in their Big Sky Conference opener, and then face North Dakota on Sunday.
