GREELEY, Colo. – The Wildcats had plenty of opportunities, but a redirected free kick proved to be the difference.
Northern Colorado's Maddie Barkow scored from just outside the six-yard box, redirecting Mariel Gutierrez's free kick, in the 37th minute and the Weber State University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to the Bears in both teams' Big Sky Conference opener on Friday night at Jackson Stadium.
Weber State (0-1-0 Big Sky, 1-8-0 overall) created seven shots on goal in the match, including six in the second half as the Wildcats relentlessly fought for the equalizer, but came up just short against Northern Colorado (1-0-0 Big Sky, 7-3-0 overall).
Three of the Wildcats' six second-half shots on goal game in the final five minutes as Weber State spent the majority of the second frame in front of the Bears' goal.
Weber State remains on the road, and will be back in action on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. MT against North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D. The Fighting Hawks (1-0-0 Big Sky, 3-3-3 overall) won their league opener, topping Idaho State 2-0.
