SALT LAKE CITY - Weber State rallied from a first half deficit but it wasn't enough as Utah State knocked off the Wildcats 76-67 Saturday afternoon in the Beehive Classic at the Vivint SmartHome Arena.
Utah State never trailed in the game and the Aggies jumped out to a quick 21-7 lead less than eight minutes into the game. USU led by as many as 18 points in the first half and led 39-27 at halftime after shooting 55 percent from the field in the half.
The Wildcats trailed by 16 points with 8:37 to play when they went on a 13-3 run to cut the lead to six points with 5:52 to play.
The 'Cats trailed by six with 4:04 to play when Sam Merrill knocked down a 3-pointer that gave the Aggies a nine point lead and went on to secure the win.
"I was disappointed in our energy in the first half," said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. "We just didn't have the juice and energy we've been playing with in the first half. In the second half we competed and started to play the way we can play but it's tough to overcome a big hole."
Utah State shot 46 percent from the field and held the Wildcats to 39 percent shooting. Weber State was 6 of 22 from 3-point range and 13 of 20 from the free throw line. The Aggies also outrebounded the Wildcats 43-34 and the 'Cats had six assists.
Four Wildcats scored in double figures led by Cody John who finished with 16 points. Freshman Caleb Nero scored a season-high 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting in 19 minutes of action. Zach Braxton added 14 points and eight rebounds and Brekkott Chapman had 11 points and nine rebounds.Â
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Wildcats against the Aggies.
Weber State now sits at 5-4 on the season. The Wildcats will close out the non-conference season with back-to-back home games, starting next Saturday, Dec. 15 against Utah Valley.
