TEMPE, AZ – The Weber State Wildcats fought valiantly against the Pac-12 Arizona State Sun Devils for 90-plus minutes today, but came up just short of an upset.Â
Â
WSU showed their resilience after losing a tough game against Arizona on Friday 6-0, by giving ASU an extremely hard-fought game. Both teams possessed well, found numbers and created opportunities to get on the board. "I am indescribably proud of this team. Today these girls executed what we asked of them. Each one of them played hard and left everything out on the field." said Interim head coach, Meagan Thunell. "In the second game of a 110-degree weekend, to come away with that kind of result, I applaud their grit."
Â
The Wildcats gave themselves many quality chances to score, especially towards the end of regulation play. Junior Mylee Broad nearly found the back of the net in the 89th minute, when she attempted a lower left corner shot that was saved by ASU goalkeeper, Giulia Cascapera.Â
Â
Weber State's defense was especially strong, as they stopped numerous advances from the Sun Devils' offense. Senior goalkeeper Nikki Pittman saved eight solid attempts from ASU to get on the scoreboard. She, along with junior central defender, Haley Thomas, anchored the defense throughout the game. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, in the second minute of the first overtime period, ASU's Olive Jones was able to slide one past Pittman to end the game 1-0 for the Sun Devils.Â
Â
"We did not back down for one second. ASU scored a great goal in overtime, but they had to earn it. We did not give it to them easily. Not today." said Thunell.
Â
Weber State (0-3-0) will take on in-state rival Utah State on Wednesday, September 4th at 4:00 pm (MT) in Logan, UT.
