LOGAN, UT– The Weber State University women's soccer team went head-to-head with in-state rival Utah State on Wednesday afternoon, but came up just short of their first win of the season.Â
Â
Despite earning a season-high shot total, the Wildcats fell 2-1 in double overtime to the Aggies at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field in Logan, UT. This is the second game in four days to go into overtime for Weber State.
Â
The Wildcats dominated possession in the first half and created multiple opportunities to find the back of the net. However, Utah State goalkeeper, Diera Walton was able to thwart any attack the Wildcats' made. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie.Â
Â
Both teams gave themselves chances to score in the second half. And, in the 68th minute, Utah State's Ashley Cardozo was able to find Mealii Enos' head off a corner kick to make it 1-0 for the Aggies. Weber State quickly answered back and broke their goal drought in the 77th minute when freshman Lauren McConnell blasted one into the back of the net off a loose ball. This is McConnell's first goal of the season and her collegiate career.
Â
Regulation ended with a 1-1 tie, and the match went into two, 10-minute golden goal periods. Possession went back-and-forth in the first overtime period, and both the Wildcats and the Aggies had two goal opportunities. However, in second overtime Utah State was able to replicate their first goal when Ashley Cardozo found Imelda Williams' head off a corner kick. The goal immediately ended the game in the 103rd minute.Â
Â
"Losing in overtime is certainly a tough thing. On one hand, I commend the efforts of our team to fight hard and come back from a one-goal deficit, but on the other, we are disappointed in the result." said Interim Head Coach Meagan Thunell. "There were certainly good moments and a lot of positive things to build upon. And ultimately, that's the most important thing to focus on going forward."
Â
Weber State (0-4-0) will travel to Reno, NV on Saturday to take on Nevada at 1:00 pm (MT). Â
