Wildcat soccer falls to Fresno State in tale of two halves

9/15/2019 3:49:00 PM | Women's Soccer

OGDEN, UT– In the second series meeting between Weber State and Fresno State, the Wildcat women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the Bulldogs this afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.

Fresno State (3-1-1) gave the Wildcats their second physical match of the weekend and came out on top after 90 minutes of play. Both goals came in the first half. The Bulldogs found the back of the net in the 30th minute when Ele Avery dished a ball to Emma Chivers who finished it. Sheyenne Hodge scored FSU's second goal in the 44th minute, just before the end of the first half.

The Wildcats came out strong in the second half, creating six more chances to score than in the first, five of the six shots taken were on-frame. Weber State also out-shot the Bulldogs 6-2 in the second half, and held most of the possession. Center defender Haley Thomas, an important anchor to the Wildcat defense, played striker in the second half and had a big presence in the offense. She took two shots (both on goal) and was able to hold the ball up top, which allowed the rest of her team to join the offense. The Wildcats did find the back of the net early in the second half, however the play was called offside, and the goal nullified.

Though the Weber State Wildcats had some good things to take away from the second half, the game ended 2-0 for the Bulldogs.

"Today's game was certainly a tale of two halves. As a staff, we were disappointed by the way the girls played during the first 45 minutes. However, they rose to the challenge issued at halftime and didn't roll over. The second half was substantially better. If we had played the entire game the way we played the second half, I think the result would have been different. We can build on that." said Interim Head Coach, Meagan Thunell.

Weber State (1-5-0) will head to Fullerton, CA to take on Cal State Fullerton next Sunday, September 22nd at 6:00 pm (MT).
