Weber State battles in 9-4 loss to Texas

2/23/2020 3:01:00 PM | Softball

Weber State softball finished out the Texas Invitational with a 9-4 loss to No. 4 Texas.

What head coach Mary Kay Amicone said: "I really liked our fight after we fell behind in the first. Mariah Ramirez responded great and we were gritty the rest of the way. I loved our hitting approach throughout the game. This tournament had outstanding competition and really helped us learn more about ourselves."

How it happened: Texas started off the game with two home runs in the first inning. Both home runs were two run shots giving the Longhorns an early 4-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Faith Hoe singled through the left side to start things off. Mariah Ramirez then stepped into the box and hit a homer over the left field fence for two RBIs.

Texas put up four more runs in the bottom of the second to take an 8-2 lead over WSU. The third and fourth innings went scoreless for both teams.

It wasn't until the top of the fifth Weber State's offense kicked into gear. Takesha Salter and Landi Hawker both got on base thanks to singles. Ashlkyn Visser than singled to right field for an RBI. Fatih Hoe singled to left field for another RBI before Ramirez grounded out to end the inning.

Weber State trailed 8-4 after five complete innings. In the bottom of the sixth, the Longhorns put  up another run for a 9-4 lead. That score stood as the game completed giving Texas the victory.

At the plate: Weber State scored four runs from nine hits with four RBIs. WSU had just four strikeouts. Saltern and Hawker both went 2-4 at the plate and each scored one run. Faith Hoe went 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Ramirez led WSU with two RBIs.

In the field: The Wildcats had 18 putouts and four assists. Faith Hoe had four putouts and McKell McCuistion two assists.

In the circle:  Kate Donaldson started in the circle for WSU. She pitched 0.1 innings and faced five batters. She gave up four hits, four runs and four errors.

Ramirez came in and pitched 5.2 innings and gave up eight hits, five runs, five errors and four walks in the 29 batters faced. She did record five strikeouts.

Notes to know:  Weber State has a 5-10 overall record now on the season.

Up Next: Weber State will head to San Diego Feb. 28-30 to take on CSUN, San Diego State, San Jose State, No. 1 UCLA and former conference foe, North Dakota.
