Weber State splits day one at San Diego Tournament

Weber State softball split the first day at the San Diego Tournament by first defeating CSUN 3-2 and later falling to San Diego State 1-0.Â
What head coach Mary Kay Amicone said: "Our pitching was very good today. We had some clutch hitting in game one. Tonight we left too many runners on base but still had a great chance to win it in the seventh. We have new opportunities tomorrow to get better."
How it happened: In the bottom of the second inning, Faith Hoe homered to right-center to put the Wildcats on the board.Â
The third and fourth innings went scoreless for both teams.Â
In the top of the fifth inning, CSUN hit a homerun for two RBI to take a 2-1 lead over WSU. The lead was short lived as WSU struck back in the bottom of the fifth.Â
To start the inning off, Courtney Pestka doubled down the left-field line. Landi Hawker then singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. With runners on second and third and one out, Chloe Camarero roped a double down the left-field line for two RBIs.Â
After five complete innings, Weber State had a 3-2 lead over CSUN. The Wildcats held their ground and as the game came to a close WSU rocked a 3-2 win.Â
At the plate: Weber State scored three runs from seven hits with three RBIs. WSU drew three walks and had eight strikeouts. Hawker led WSU and went 2-3 at the plate and scored one run. Camarero had the game-high with two RBIs.Â
In the field: The Wildcats had 21 putouts and 16 assists. Ashlyn Visser led WSU with 12 putouts while Kate Donaldson had seven assists.Â
In the circle:Â Kate Donaldson started in the circle and pitched all seven innings. She faced 28 batters and gave up four hits, two runs, with two errors. She had one walk and four strikeouts.Â
GAME TWO -
How it happened: Weber State and SDSU had a well fought battle. In the first inning, both teams had solid defense. WSU did get one hit but left the runner on base. The second and third innings followed in suite with both teams getting runners on but none were able to score.Â
In the bottom of the fourth, San Diego State was able to get two runners on base and into scoring position. WSU allowed just one run to cross the plate giving the Aztecs a 1-0 lead after four innings.Â
In the top of the seventh, Lauren Hoe drew a walk to give WSU a runner on base. Courtney Pestka and Takesha Saltern got on base thanks to SDSU fielding errors. With bases loaded and two outs, the Aztecs were able to lock down and keep the Wildcats from scoring. WSU finished the seventh inning with three left on base.Â
At the plate: Weber State went scoreless and had just one hit. The Wildcats drew one walk and had three strikeouts. Takesha Saltern kept SDSU from getting the no hitter as she had one hit for WSU.Â
In the field: Weber State had 18 putouts and nine assists with just one error. Ashlyn Visser had eight putouts. Chloe Camarero had four assists.Â
In the circle: Â Amanda Sink started in the circle and pitched all six innings. She faced 24 batters and gave up just two hits, one run, and one error.Â
Notes to know:Â Weber State has a 6-11 overall record now on the season.Â
