Weber State ends opening weekend with a 12-3 loss to Stanford

Weber State softball finished opening weekend falling to Stanford 12-3 Sunday morning. 

What Head Coach Mary Kay Amicone said: "Overall we are happy about our progress. It was nice to get working on things that we need to get better at. We are excited to have a day to catch up and get back to work."


How it happened:  Stanford got a 1-0 jump on WSU after two complete innings of play. In the top of the third, Stanford found the hot sticks and put nine runs up in the top of third to take a 10-0 lead over WSU. 

In the bottom of the fourth, WSU found some momentum at the plate. Takesha Saltern started things off with a double down the left field. Landi Hawker then reached on an error. With runners on first and second, Faith Hoe doubled to left center for two RBIs. 

Brooke Moeai singled to left center before Katelyn Whiting grounded out to shortstop for an RBI. 

After four innings WSU, trailed 10-3. In  the top of the fifth inning, Stanford had a two run homer to push their score to 12. In the bottom of the fifth,  WSU had bases juiced but weren't able to get any runners across the plate. 

WSU fell with a final score of 12-3 in five innings to Stanford. 

At the plate: Weber State scored three runs from three hits with three RBIs and two doubles. WSU drew two walks and had four strikeouts. 

Faith Hoe led WSU going 1-2 at the plate with two RBIs from double. Takesha Saltern had a solid day at the plate as well going 1-3 and had a double. 

In the field: WSU had 15 putouts and nine assists. Brooke Moeai had seven putouts. Faith Hoe and Annabelle Gtierrez each had three assists. 

In the circle:  Kate Donaldson started in the circle for WSU and pitched 2.1 innings. She gave up four hits, five runs, three errors and two walks in the 14 batters faced. 

Amanda Sink casme in and pitched .2 innings and gave up four hits, five runs and one walk in the eight batters she faced. 

Jaclyn Gold finished the game for WSU pitching two complete innings. She gave up three hits, two runs, two errors one walk and had one strikeout in the 10 batters faced. 

Notes to know:  Weber State has a 3-2 overall record now on the season. 

Up Next: Weber State will head to Las Vegas, Nev.  to take on Utah Valley, UNLV and Montana Feb. 14-16.
