Wildcats fall to Griz' 2-1

On Friday afternoon, the Weber State Wildcats came away heartbroken after suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Montana Grizzlies in Missoula, MT.Â
Coming into the match, WSU was sitting in the driver seat on their journey to a regular-season Big Sky championship and needed victories over the Grizzlies and Northern Colorado Bears to claim their crown but unfortunately, after a fast start, the Wildcats fell victim to a pattern they'd once mastered.Â
Twice this season have the Wildcats fell behind 1-0 but then rallied from behind to net two goals and secure a win. Against the Grizzlies, Weber State scored in the 12th minute after Andelin Baldwin tapped in a goal with her right foot and they took that lead into the locker room at halftime. Despite the advantage on the scoreboard, the Wildcats were having a hard time controlling the ball while Montana was applying pressure to goalkeeper Mekell Moss and the rest of the Wildcat defense.Â
In the second half, the wheels fell off. Although the Wildcats started the second half with higher intensity than the Griz' - Montana eventually began to again get comfortable on WSU's end of the field which eventually helped them net goals in the 70th and 73rd minutes of the match and take a 2-1 lead.Â
Throughout the remainder of the game, the Wildcats fought, made runs, and played with a sense of urgency but ultimately were unable to find an equalizer which gave arch-rival Montana a 2-1 lead on their home field.Â
Weber State now sits with an overall record of 9-7 and is 6-2 in Big Sky play. Their shot at winning the regular-season title has now become a bit murkier as they now have to hope Idaho State beats Montana if WSU beats Northern Colorado.Â
The trip to Greenley, CO will be where the Wildcats close out their regular season but will also be where they hope to clinch an NCAA Tournament Berth as it's the site of this year's Big Sky tournament.Â
WSU battles NoCo at noon on Sunday.Â
