Wildcats beat Bengals 40-17 as Shaheed sets kickoff return record

Rashid Shaheed returned his seventh career kickoff for a touchdown, a new FCS all-time record.
Shaheed set an FCS record with his seventh career kickoff return for a touchdown in helping lead the Wildcats to the win, which moved Weber State to 4-4 on the season and 3-2 in Big Sky play.Â
How it happenedÂ
The Wildcats jumped off to a quick start with a touchdown on their first possession. Bronson Barron connected with Rashid Shaheed for a 36-yard touchdown less than five minutes into the game to put the Wildcats up 7-0.
Kyle Thompson connected on a 22-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 10-0 lead with 4:36 left in the first quarter.Â
The Bengals added a field goal early in the second quarter before Weber State came back with a long drive, capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Kris Jackson to make it 17-3. Idaho State scored a touchdown late in the first half and the Wildcats led 17-10 at the break.Â
Thompson added another field goal to begin the third quarter after connecting on a 37-yard attempt to give WSU a 20-10 lead.Â
The Bengals picked off a Wildcat pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown that made it 20-17.
That's when Shaheed made history. On the ensuing kickoff Shaheed returned the kick 98 yards for a touchdown that gave the Wildcats a 28-17 lead. It was Shaheed's seventh career kickoff return for a touchdown, which is a new FCS career record.Â
Weber State scored on it next possession as Jackson scored another touchdown, a one-yard run that put the 'Cats up 34-17.Â
Late in the fourth quarter, Naseme Colvin blocked an Idaho State punt and Winston Reid recovered it in the endzone for a touchdown.Â
Numbers to know
Weber State totaled 405 yards of offense and held the Bengals to 193 yards, including just 24 yards rushing. WSU had 216 yards passing and 189 yards rushing.Â
The Wildcats also held ISU to 1 of 11 on third down conversion attempts, while offensively, Weber State was 10 of 15 on third downs.Â
Bronson Barron finished the day 14 of 24 passing for 294 yards and one touchdown. Creyton Cooper led the rushing attack with 59 yards rushing. Dave Jones added eight carries for 38 yards and Jackson had 13 carries for 33 yards, along with the two touchdowns.Â
In addition to the kickoff return, Shaheed also had four catches for 88 yards and one touchdown. Ty Macpherson added three catches for 35 yards.Â
Shaheed also became the fourth player in Weber State history to reach 5,000 career all-purpose yards.Â
On defense, Jared Schiess had six tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Spencer Niutupuivaha and BJ Taufalele also recorded sacks and the 'Cats had eight tackles for loss.Â

After two games on the road, the Wildcat will return to Stewart Stadium to host Portland State on Saturday, November 6. Kickoff at 1 p.m.Â
