Wildcats Set To Face Montana For Big Sky Title

11/6/2021 3:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Just one day sits between a meeting between the Weber State Wildcats and Montana Grizzlies that will decide who wins the Big Sky championship, advances on to the NCAA Tournament, and claims bragging rights until next fall.

When the seeding had become finalized, it became clear that the Wildcats would have to be prepared to play as they saw Idaho sitting in front of them and then potentially both Northern Colorado in the semifinals and Montana in the championship; that potential shifted to reality once WSU crushed Idaho 3-0 in the opening round of the tournament and then made a statement in their 3-2 win over top-seeded UNC who is hosting the tournament. Now all that sits between the 'Cats and glory is a meeting against their foes that wear maroon as they look to make good on their revenge tour.

That tour of revenge is inspired by the crushing pair of weekend defeats that were dealt by the Grizzlies and UNC Bears which took WSU out of the race from regular-season champions and plummeted them down to the tournament's fourth seed. But with their elimination of the Bears, the Wildcats have the opportunity of avenging that weekend by finishing this one as the queens' of the Big Sky.

Weber State has been scorching the scoreboard dating back to when they began conference play, they've not only scored in each game but have only been held to one goal three times but since the tournament kicked off they've been even better - scoring six goals in the span of two games while only allowing two scores.

The 'Cats goal scorers in the opening round win against Idaho came from Lily Webster, Rachel Twede, and Sadie Newsom, Webster was assisted by Amy Kenney while Twede was assisted by Yira Yoggerst. Kaytlin Bradley and the Wildcat defense pitched a shutout as the Vandals never once sent a threatening shot towards the box.

Against UNC, Yoggesrt, Taylor Slack, and Morgan Furmaniak each tacked on pivotal goals to push them past the Bears. Slack was assisted by Andelin Baldwin while Furmaniak's score came off an assist from Lauren McConnell.

One win is all that's left in the Wildcats journey towards immortality and they'll attempt to secure it against Montana on Sunday, Nov. 6 at noon in Greeley on ESPN+.
