Softball Drops Pair on Opening Day

2/12/2021 6:06:00 PM | Softball

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Nearly a year from the last time the Weber State softball team played its last game, a young Wildcats squad dropped a pair as the 2021 season got underway at the Grand Canyon Kickoff Classic on Friday.

The Wildcats opened up the day with a 9-0 loss to Oregon in the tournament's first game of the day before falling 8-2 to Grand Canyon in the afternoon.

Mariah Ramirez took to the circle for Weber State in the opener and tossed four very strong innings, keeping the game scoreless and holding the Pac-12 Ducks without a hit after four frames. Oregon was able to break through in the fifth inning with five runs, highlighted by a 3 RBI triple from Allee Bunker. A defensive miscue enhanced the damage for WSU, as three of the five runs were unearned.

Oregon added another four runs in the sixth inning against reliever Kate Donaldson to put the game away. Brooke Yanez pitched five scoreless innings for Oregon to earn the win. The Wildcats threatened on multiple occasions in the game, loading the bases in the first for their biggest offensive threat of the game. McKell McCuistion started off the fourth with a leadoff double to right center for another threat, but the Ducks were able to escape both frames without allowing any damage.

In the afternoon, the Wildcats got a pair of doubles over the first four innings, with Faith Hoe doubling in the third inning for the Wildcats' first hit in the game and her twin sister Lauren Hoe adding a two-bagger of her own in the fourth.

The Wildcats found themselves down 3-0 after four innings, however, as Grand Canyon managed to scratch out a single run in the second, third and fourth innings against Wildcat starter Amanda Sink.

Weber State finally broke through offensively on a solo home run from Katelyn Whiting in the top of the fifth, but the Lopes responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame. The Wildcats added another run in the top of the 7th inning as Noelle Foster doubled home Makayla Donahoo.

The Wildcats will be back in action with another pair of games at the Kickoff Classic on Saturday. WSU will face off against Big Sky rival Montana at 11:00 a.m. before taking on Oregon once again at 1:30 p.m.
