Weber State opened up the Dixie State Tournament in fine fashion on Friday, taking a 9-4 decision against Northern Colorado before defeating tournament host Dixie State 5-1 at Karl Brooks Field in St. George, Utah. The two wins gave the Wildcats a three-game winning streak and improved the team to 6-6 on the season.
The Wildcats took the early lead against Northern Colorado (2-4)Â as Chloe Camarero singled home Mia Rushton in the top of the first inning. The hit started off a great game at the plate for Camarero as she finished just a double short of hitting for the cycle.
After the Bears tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first, Weber State went back to work offensively, scoring four times in the second inning. Makayla Donahoo singled home Katelyn Whiting to start the team's scoring in the frame. Brooke Hatfield then scored on a Rushton fielder's choice, and Camarero capped the inning with a two-run homer, her first of the season, to left center.
Weber State dropped another four runs on the Bears in the fourth inning, highlighted by an RBI triple by Camarero. Faith Hoe and Whiting also drove in runs to help the Wildcats build an 9-1 lead.
Northern Colorado tried to climb back in the game, chipping away at the Wildcat lead with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but WSU held on for the win. Kate Donaldson allowed two earned runs over 5.2 innings to earn the win for Weber State.
Camarero finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Hatfield, Faith Hoe and Lauren Hoe each added a pair of hits.
In the evening, the Wildcats used another big inning to jump out ahead of Dixie State (2-10) as Hatfield singled home a pair of runs to cap a four run third inning. A pair of Trailblazer errors led to a pair of runs to start the frame.
Abigail Sagert homered to left centerfield to add a single run in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-0.
Mariah Ramirez went the distance in the circle for Weber State, scattering six hits and walking only one while striking out six Trailblazers to earn the win. The win improved the sophomore righthander's record to 4-3 on the year. Dixie State's Brylee Rudd singled home a run in the seventh inning to breakup the shutout and put the lone earned run against Ramirez on the day.
The Wildcats will face Utah State on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. for their lone game of the day, before finishing the tournament with a rematch against Dixie State on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
