Weber State's Big Sky Winning Streak Ends in Doubleheader Split

4/23/2021 8:52:00 PM | Softball

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Weber State saw it's Big Sky Conference winning streak come to an end on Friday as they split a doubleheader with Southern Utah at Kathryn Berg Field. The Wildcats broke open a tight first game with runs in the later innings for a 10-1 win for their 10th straight conference victory, but the Thunderbirds responded with an 8-6 win in the closing game to earn the split.

The Wildcats moved to 20-14 overall and 10-1 in league play after the split, while SUU moved to 16-22 overall and remained two games back of Weber State in Big Sky play at 8-3.

Emily Ruhl put the Wildcats on the board in the second inning of game one with an RBI double, and Makayla Donahoo and Mia Rushton each added RBI hits in the fourth to make it 3-0. Rushton's double down the left field line gave her a hit in 22-straight games, giving her the program's all-time record. She moved past Takesha Saltern, who had a 21-game hitting streak back in 2018.

The Wildcats broke the game open in the fifth, scoring four times on an RBI single by Faith Hoe and a 3-run home run by Mariah Ramirez.

Brooke Brown put the T-birds on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Wildcats answered with another three runs in the seventh to put the game away.

Mariah Ramirez pitched a great game in the circle for the Wildcats, holding the Big Sky's top offensive team to one run on six hits while striking out eight to earn the complete game victory. With the win, Ramirez improved to 10-5 on the season. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with the home run and three RBI.

In game two, the Wildcats scored first with a Katelyn Whiting sacrifice fly in the third inning, but SUU's Makall Whetten provided the game's big blow with a grand slam in the bottom of the frame to put the Thunderbirds up 4-1.

Weber State scratched across three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game, but Josey White capped a four-run inning for Southern Utah in their half of the inning with a three-run home run.

Lauren Hoe launched a two-run blast in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-6, but the long ball was the last score of the game as SUU held on for the win.

Faith Hoe went 5-for-8 on the day, while Rushton went 5-for-9 as the pair tied for the team-lead in hits on the day.

The two teams will play a final game on Saturday at Noon.
