'Cats Sweep Big Doubleheader at Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Weber State softball team took the top spot in the Big Sky Conference standings with a big doubleheader sweep against Sacramento State on Friday at Shea Stadium. With the two wins, the Wildcats improved to 15-12 overall and 5-0 in the Big Sky, while handing the Hornets their first two conference losses of the year.

Game one began as a pitcher's duel with WSU starter Mariah Ramirez and Sacramento State's Marissa Bertuccio putting zeroes on the scoreboard across the first three innings.

The Wildcats broke through in the fourth inning, scoring three times. Chloe Camarero singled home Katelyn Whiting to get things going, and Brooke Hatfield later notched a two-RBI single.

The Hornets (12-17 overall; 6-2 Big Sky) got on the board in their half of the fourth on an RBI double by Amber Rodriguez, and scored three more runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Rodriguez dealt the big blow in that inning as well, with a 2 RBI single.

Weber State responded in the top of the sixth inning as Lauren Hoe and Emily Ruhl each doubled home a run to give the Wildcats the lead for good at 5-4.

Kate Donaldson came on in relief of Ramirez in the fourth inning and pitched 3.2 innings to earn the win, her fifth of the season.

Nine different Wildcats recorded hits in the opening game, led by Ashlyn Visser, who went 2-for-4. Hatfield went 1-for-3 and lead the team with two-RBI.

WSU jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring three times in the opening inning. Camarero started things off, going deep to left field for a two-run home run and Faith Hoe later added an RBI triple.

Alondra Mejia put the Hornets on the board with a solo homer in the second inning, and Weber State added a run on a Hatfield RBI groundout in the third to make the score 4-1 after three innings.

Sacramento State added another pair of runs in the fifth as Aliyah Robles hit a two-run home run to center field, cutting the Wildcat lead down to a single run.

In the sixth, the Wildcats stole a run on a double steal, with Mia Rushton stealing second and Aliya Harmon stealing home.

Weber State then added four more runs in the top of the seventh to open up a six run lead. Camarero opened the inning with her second home run of the game, her third of the season, with another shot to left field. Lauren Hoe and Emily Ruhl each added RBI doubles and the Wildcats led 9-3 going to the bottom of the inning.

The Wildcats ended up needing every single bit of that six run lead as the Hornets stormed back to score a half dozen runs to send the game into extra innings. After a pair of singles to open the inning, Lewa Day made WSU pay with a three-run shot over the center field fence. Katelyn Snow and Alexis Parish also added RBI singles in the Hornet rally.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Camarero singled home Rushton in the top of the 10th to put Weber State ahead 10-9 and Amanda Sink shut down a brief two-out threat by Sacramento State in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

Sink, who started game two for Weber State in the circle, ended up picking up the win in relief after re-entering in the bottom of the ninth, improving her record to 2-2 on the season.

The Wildcats pounded out 14 hits in the closing game of the day, with Camarero and Faith Hoe leading the way with 3-for-5 performances. Rushton, Visser and Ruhl each added two hits for Weber State.

Camarero finished the day 4-for-9 with a team-high five RBI. Rushton finished the day 3-for-10 and picked up a hit in each game to run her consecutive games hitting streak to 16. Faith Hoe finished the day 4-for-8 at the plate and Visser went 4-for-10, with both players getting hits in both games to run current hitting streaks to eight games.

The two teams will take to the field for the final game of the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MT.
