Weber State went 1-1 last week, beating Utah Valley in a classic rivalry match and extending the school record winning streak at Swenson Gym to 19, and then dropped a match to Utah the following day.
Wildcat volleyball is back in action this week as it heads to Nebraska to take on the Omaha Mavericks and Kansas State Wildcats in the Omaha Challenge.
Regarding returning to her home state to play volleyball, senior setter Ashlyn Power said, "I'm really excited just to go home and be back in the Midwest. I love any chance I get to go home, but to be playing volleyball and the fact that Jeremiah (Larsen) worked hard to get a game in Nebraska on the schedule means a lot to me."
As far as initial thoughts on the two opponents that the Wildcats will be playing this weekend, Power added, "All I know is that they're both really good teams. They're highly competitive teams. We played Kansas State a few years ago and they're well coached and have a good program. I think the same of Omaha. They took Nebraska to five and these will be good matches for us to get better."
This will be the first time that WSU and Omaha have ever squared off against each other. The Mavericks, despite having a 2-6 record on the year, have been extremely competitive in most of their matches, having forced a fifth set against no. 4 Nebraska, Arizona State, and SMU, and winning in four sets against Georgia. In the 2020 season, Omaha had a 13-6 record and made it to the Summit League tournament where it lost against Denver.
Friday's match against Kansas State will be the fourth match between KSU and Weber State, the last of which was a Weber State win (3-1) in 2019. Kansas State holds the series advantage at 2-1. Kansas State is currently on a five-match winning streak, including three consecutive wins at the Kansas State Invitational, and is coming off a spring season where it had a 13-8 record.
