WSU Volleyball Stumbles Against Omaha

9/16/2021 8:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Weber State Volleyball opened the Omaha Challenge in Baxter Arena on Thursday evening against Omaha and dropped its opening match against the Mavericks 3-1 (18-25, 17-25, 25-20, 21-25). With the loss, the Wildcats record moves to 5-4 on the season.

In the first set, Omaha leapt out to a 10-4 lead prior to a Jeremiah Larsen timeout. Following the timeout, the Wildcats scored eight of the next ten points and tied things up at 12. The two teams would each go on a run and things would be deadlocked once more at 16, but the Mavericks' balanced attack proved to be the difference and Omaha tallied nine of the sets' final eleven points to close things out.

The Wildcats wouldn't see many changes in the second set as Omaha went wire-to-wire to take a two-set lead in the match and held an eight point lead on a few separate occasions.

Weber State regrouped in the third set, however. After things were knotted up at five points a pop, outside hitter Dani Nay collected three kills and WSU went on a five-point run to establish control. The pendulum swung once again, and the Maverick attack highlighted by pin hitters Sadie Limback and Rachel Fairbanks helped Omaha regain the lead at 16-12. It was the Wildcat pin hitters, however, that would see thing through for Weber State, as Nay, Rylin Adams, and Emma Mangum combined for six kills down the stretch and WSU won the set 25-20.

Although the fourth set was closer than the first couple of sets, the results were the same. Setter Sadie Clarkson spread the ball around and the Mavericks controlled things despite a late Wildcat rally and closed the match out in their home opener with a 25-21 score.

Nay led all Wildcats with 21 kills on 50 attempts and got 14 digs to notch another double-double on the season. Adams also had a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Setter Ashlyn Power led WSU with 39 assists and is just two assists away from moving up into the sixth position on the Big Sky Conference career assists leaderboard.
Weber State will be back in action tomorrow at 12:00 pm mountain time against Big 12 opponent Kansas State for WSU's final out of conference game before it returns to Swenson Gym to start conference play.
