Wildcats Go 1-1 In Oklahoma To Wrap Up Non-Conference Schedule

9/20/2021 11:32:00 AM | Women's Soccer

Over the weekend the Weber State Wildcats closed out their non-conference portion of the schedule with a road trip to Oklahoma where they split the games 1-1, winning against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles but falling to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls.

The Wildcats kicked things off with a trip to Tulsa to face off against ORU which was the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The two teams didn't share a common opponent which made them about as unfamiliar as they could possibly get.

WSU went took the field and were pretty much in control throughout the entire night due to their aggressiveness on the offensive end, they rattled off 16 shots and earned 4 corner kicks.

After nearly 16 minutes had gone by, the 'Cats were celebrating a score after Morgan Furmaniak redirected a ball into the back of the net to give the dominant freshmen her third goal of the year.

Going into the half, WSU held that 1-0 lead but would quickly surrender shortly after coming out of the locker room. 47 minutes into the game ORU was awarded a penalty kick and knocked in a goal which knotted the game at 1-1.

As the clock ticked on, WSU continued to create scoring chances, and with 14 minutes left in the match - Amy Kenney struck gold. Kenney banged home a shot while being assisted by Audrey Hadley to push the WSU lead out to 2-1 which would hold for the right of the night and give starting goalkeeper Kaytlin Bradley a birthday win on her record.

Next, Weber State traveled over to Stillwater, OK for their Sunday afternoon date with OSU.

Oklahoma State was the second Big 12 team that they'd faced during the season with the first being the season opener against Kansas State in Manhattan, KS. Despite a tough, gritty effort WSU was unable to make OSU the second Big 12 team that they'd have defeated.

The first half was initially dominated by the Cowgirls but the 'Cats played stingy defense and Mekell Moss didn't let a shot get past her which allowed Weber State to play loose and without reason to panic. They were able to put together a few scoring opportunities but when halftime came the scoreboard read 0-0.

When the teams came out and the second half began, it took less than a minute for ORU to find the first and only score of the day; taking a 1-0 lead.

Throughout the rest of the match, WSU showed off composure and poise but ultimately was unable to find an equalizer against a very talented OSU team.

The conclusion of these two games marks the beginning of Big Sky play for the Wildcats and they'll kick it off on the Wildcat Soccer Field on Friday, Sep. 24 at 7 P.M. against the Idaho Vandals.
