Weber State Advances To The Big Sky Tournament Semi-Final With A Shootout Win Over The Hornets

11/2/2022 5:18:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Greeley, CO - #5 Weber State upsets the #4 Sacramento State Hornets as Mekell Moss makes huge saves to help advance the 'Cats in the Big Sky tournament.

How It Happened:
The game started slowly for the Wildcats, as they were unable to create anything dangerous in the first half, recording only two shots, none on goal. The Hornets were active in the first half, recording eight shots and finally scoring in the 43rd minute when Jordan St. Goularte won a battle for the ball 40 yards from goal, ran right past four Wildcat defenders, and put the ball in the right corner of the net to give the Hornets the lead at the break, 1-0.

As has been the case for much of the year, the Wildcats turned up the pressure in the second half and outshot the hornets 10-5 in the frame. In the 69th minute, the 'Cats finally broke through when outside defender Andelin Binford received a pass from Yira Yoggerst down the right side, took the ball to the end line, cut back inside, and deftly played the ball near post to tie the game up.

The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the half but ended up tied and were forced into overtime to decide the quarterfinal match.

Overtime:
In the first overtime period, the Hornets were the aggressors and had the best chance of the match when Katie Bessemer won the ball on the right side of the field, dribbled in toward the goal, and was fouled on her cut just inside the area to win a penalty for the Hornets. Goalkeeper Mekell Moss was up to the task however as she dove and blocked the kick to preserve the tie for the 'Cats.

The second overtime period followed the same pattern as the first with the Hornets the aggressors and the 'Cats struggling to find their way forward. Mekell Moss made another game-saving stop with just two minutes remaining in the game on the Hornets' 8th corner kick when she made a near-point-blank save off of a header.

The game headed to penalty kicks to decide who would move on to battle #1-seeded Northern Arizona in the semi-finals.

Kicks from the Spot:
Yira Yoggerst took the first kick despite leaving the game with cramps just a few minutes earlier and missed over the crossbar. Mekell Moss kept the 'Cats even with a block on Sac State's first shot, once again diving right. Morgan Furmaniak then powered her shot into the right corner to get the 'Cats on track. When the second Sac State shooter missed off the left goalpost, the 'Cats just had to make their remaining shots to win, which Alexis Simpson, Brynlee Meyerhoffer and Rylee Tatton did.

Coach Sanders praised the defense for holding a very good Sac State offense to one goal for the game. He said that they had a good tussle with NAU on Oct 29th at Wildcat field where Weber State won 1-0. He expects more of the same on Friday when WSU faces NAU for the privilege to play in the Big Sky Tournament final.

Up Next:
The 'Cats advance to the semifinals of the Big Sky Soccer Championships. They face Northern Arizona on November 4th at 2:00 p.m. (MT) in Greeley, CO.
