Wildcats Drop Games to Rams, Lopes

2/12/2022 10:25:00 PM | Softball

Weber State softball dropped to 2-2 in the young season after dropping games to Fordham and Grand Canyon on Saturday.

Seeking revenge for the loss they suffered at the hands of the Wildcats on Friday, it was the Rams who struck first in the first inning on Saturday. An infield single off Mariah Ramirez was enough to plate a runner who was on third base and give Fordham a 1-0 lead.

Following the first inning run, neither team would be able to score through the fourth inning when things started to open up a bit. After a couple of walks and another runner who reached on an error to load the bases, Head Coach Mary Kay Amicone decided to switch things up in the circle and bring in Arissa Henderson. Henderson, who was otherwise tremendous on the day, gave up a two out double that cleared the bases and gave the Rams a 4-0 lead that the Wildcats weren't able to threaten.

Starting with a Chloe Camarero walk in the sixth inning, the Wildcats started to rally a bit. Henderson singled to advance Camarero to second, then Faith Hoe scorched a double down the right field line that would score the runner and give the Cats their lone run of the game.

4-1 was the final score, and with excellent pitching from both sides, neither team was able to muster more than four hits. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 2-1 on the season and WSU went to prepare for the second game of the day against Grand Canyon.

Against the Lopes, Weber State didn't waste much time getting the offense going. Mia Rushton and McKell McCuistion were both able to reach base on a pair of errant throws from the Lope defense, the second of which was able to score Rushton from second base. Camarero stepped up to the plate and punched the pitch down the left field line for an RBI double to make it a 2-0 ball game. Faith Hoe singled to center field that brought Camarero around to score, and GCU decided to make a pitching change that proved to stifle the Wildcat bats.

Henderson got the start in the circle for Weber State and the Lopes were able to get a pair of runs off of her in the first inning to cut the Wildcat lead to 3-2.

There wasn't a lot of offensive action between the two sides as the score would remain the same until the bottom of the sixth inning.

With nobody on base and in a 1-0 count, GCU's Kinsey Koeltzow sent the ball for a ride over the center field wall that tied the game up at at 3-3.

In the top of the seventh, Weber State immediately had a runner reach base as McCuistion was hit by a pitch, but the Cats couldn't capitalize on the opportunity and went away quietly in the seventh.

Ramirez came on in Henderson's relief in the bottom of the seventh inning and promptly retired the first two Lopes that she faced. A two-out single to right field and a stolen base quickly changed the situation for GCU as they had the winning run in scoring position. Grand Canyon's Katelyn Dunckel came up and hit a slow rolling ground ball that she had a chance to beat out, but an errant throw got away from McCuistion at first base and the runner was able to score from second base. The Lopes stole a 4-3 victory and improved to 3-0 to remain undefeated on the season.

The Wildcats (2-2) will be back in action tomorrow in Phoenix as they face their first power five opponent in the form of the Kansas Jayhawks. The game will start at 11:30 AM and updates will be sent out over Weber State Softball's Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages.
