For the fifth time in the past six years the Weber State Wildcat softball team will be making a trip to Las Vegas to play in the UNLV Desert Classic.

The Wildcats will be heading to Las Vegas for the four game tournament after going 3-2 in an opening weekend tournament in Phoenix, Arizona. The Wildcats' wins came against Bradley, Fordham, and Kansas, while dropping games against Fordham and Grand Canyon.

In the UNLV Desert Classic, Weber State will match up with UNLV and Kansas City.

WEBER STATE (3-2)
  • Weber State's win over Kansas on opening weekend was the Wildcats' first win against a team from a power five conference since 2019 when they beat Ohio State, Stanford, and Utah.
  • WSU returns 19 players from last season's team that won the 2021 Big Sky regular season championship.
  • Weber State was the preseason pick to win the 2022 Big Sky Conference championship.
  • The Wildcat power numbers were on point during the opening tournament. Weber State ranks second in the Big Sky Conference in doubles (seven), and home runs (four).
  • Power pitching propelled the Wildcats to some impressive victories in Phoenix. As a team, Weber State leads the Big Sky in opposing batting average (.198), strikeouts (39), hits allowed (26), and is the only team in the conference who hasn't recorded a wild pitch.
  • Faith Hoe proved to be a catalyst for the Wildcat bats. She led the Cats by batting .538 with seven hits, walking four times, and leading the conference in on base percentage (.667).
  • Chloe Camarero's power at the plate was a major difference maker for the Wildcats. Her three home runs lead the Big Sky Conference, and she ranks second in the Big Sky in total bases (14), and slugging percentage (.933).
  • With a solo shot against Fordham, Lauren Hoe moved into sole possession of second place on WSU's all-time career leaderboard with 19 total home runs, and only trails Sarah Hingsberger's 35 career home runs.
  • 20 strikeouts in 16.1 innings pitched over opening weekend was enough to put Arissa Henderson at the top of the conference in total strikeouts. Henderson struck 16 batters out swinging and has a 1.29 ERA to lead the Wildcats.
  • Reigning Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Year, Mariah Ramirez, pitched 13.2 innings over the Cats' first five games, tallied a 3.07 ERA and struck out 16 of the hitters she faced.
UNLV (5-0)
  • UNLV is 9-4 all-time against Weber State and has won the last seven matchups between the two teams.
  • The Rebels were the preseason pick to win the Mountain West Conference.
  • UNLV went 5-0 in the opening weekend's Rebel Kickoff tournament after beating BYU, CSU Bakersfield, and Hawaii.
  • As a team, the Rebels hit a scorching .331 in their opening five games of the season, which ties them with Boise State for second in the conference.
  • After hitting three home runs and eight RBI in the team's first five games, center fielder Janyssa Martin was named MWC Player of the Week in the opening week of the year. She also leads the MWC in slugging percentage (1.273)
  • UNLV boasts the top three players in the MWC in on base percentage. Martin, April Visser, and Alyssa Trejo, all have an OBP of .611.
  • Jenny Bressler led the Rebels as she tallied three wins and struck out 18 batters over 18.1 innings over the opening tournament.
KANSAS CITY (1-4)
  • This will be the first time in WSU history that the Wildcats have played against Kansas City.
  • The Roos were tied for second in the preseason Summit League softball polls with North Dakota State.
  • In its opening tournament in Tampa, Florida, Kansas City played three games against top 25 opponents.
  • After hitting .412 in the opening weekend, Kloe Hilbrenner leads the Roos in batting average and is ranked sixth in the Summit League.
  • Sydney Nichols is one of five players in the Summit League to hit multiple home runs over opening weekend.
  • Casey Stout had a tremendous opening tournament against excellent competition. In 14.2 innings, she struck out five hitters and led the team with a 2.86 ERA.
