No Quit Cats Rally to Beat Wolverines, Winthrop

2/25/2022 8:43:00 PM | Softball

Some call them the Cardiac Cats.

Others call them the No Quit Cats.

Whatever you choose to call them, the one undeniable fact about this iteration of the Weber State softball team is that they are fun.

The Wildcats played two more games in the Dixie State Tournament on Friday, and reigned victorious with an 8-7 thriller over Utah Valley and a 11-3 thrashing of Winthrop.

The game against the Wolverines was an all-timer. It was very likely one of the best, most improbable wins in school history.

By the third inning, UVU was on its way to run-ruling the Wildcats and had a resounding 7-0 lead.

Cue the Cardiac/No Quit Cats.

Chloe Camarero led the bottom of the fourth off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a fly ball that was caught for the second out of the frame. Lauren Hoe came up clutch and delivered a base hit to left to get the Cats on the board and change the score to 7-1.

Katelyn Whiting stepped up to the dish and raked another single for to give the Cats two on and two out, when freshman Gianna Memoli came to bat. It was a 2-2 pitch that Memoli smacked high into the St. George sun for a three-run blast.

"That was the turning point," Mary Kay Amicone noted of Memoli's dinger. "She crushed that pitch." Amicone also highlighted how proud she was of her team getting the job done with two outs in the inning.

Neither team scored again until Mariah Ramirez belted her second home run of the year to make it a 7-5 UVU lead. Lauren Hoe reached on a base hit and was brought around to score on an Abigail Sagert single up the middle, and the score went to 7-6 heading into the seventh.

The Wolverines didn't score in their half of the seventh, and the Wildcats had a chance to tie or win.

With one out, Camarero, who was tied for second in the nation in home runs entering this weekend, socked a 1-0 pitch high over the left field wall for her eighth home run of the year, which sets a career high for home runs in a season, and tied the game up at seven.

The Cats continued on to work the bases full, and with a full count it was Memoli who delivered a decisive blow by taking ball four to walk in the winning run.

WSU won 8-7 in a game that lasted almost three hours.

"It was incredible, it was a tale of two teams, for sure. I'm super proud of them. We got punched in the mouth, and we're just not gonna give into that," a beaming Coach Amicone said following the win. "That's one of the incredible wins of my career. It was unreal and it was like it was happening in slow motion."

It was Amanda Sink who took the circle in the second game of the day, this one was against Winthrop in the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Although Winthrop scored on a solo home run in the first inning, the Wildcats came clawing back with a five-run response in the second and third innings to take a 5-1 lead.

Winthrop got a couple of runs make, but it wouldn't be enough. Lauren Hoe hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, her third homer of the year, and finished the game having driven in seven RBI. McKell McCuistion got in on the home run action by crushing a two-run shot in the fifth to make it an 11-3 advantage for WSU, and Winthrop wasn't able to respond. 11-3 was the final score in five innings.

Following the game Amicone said, "We were having fun. It was much needed to go out and get a run rule because that first game was so long."

The two wins move Weber State to 12-2 on the year as they continue to win at a historic rate.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday morning as they finish up the Dixie State Tournament against the Nevada Wolfpack. The game will be at 10 AM and can be viewed on WAC Digital.
