Wildcats Set School Record in Run Rule Rout

History in St. George, Utah.

With Weber State softball's 8-0 win over Nevada on Saturday, the Wildcats set a new record for longest winning streak in school history at 11 consecutive games.

Arissa Henderson started in the circle for the Cats and got into a bit of early trouble by allowing a pair of Nevada runners to reach, but she struck out a couple of batters and got a ground out to end the top of the first.

The bottom of the first is where the majority of the game's offensive action took place.

After Mia Rushton and McKell McCuistion reached base safely, the stage was set for superstar Chloe Camarero. A double to left-center field was enough to score Rushton from second and advance McCuistion to third. Faith Hoe took her at bat and singled up the middle to score both runners and give the Cats a 3-0 lead.

Mariah Ramirez walked, and Faith Hoe and Ramirez stole third and second bases, respectively, after which Lauren Hoe took a base on balls to load the bags with Wildcats. Katelyn Whiting singled to score Faith from third, then a Makayla Donahoo groundout brought home the fifth Wildcat of the inning, as WSU ended the first with a 5-0 lead.

Henderson continued to baffle the Pack's bats throughout the game, striking out five batters between the second and fourth innings.

Rushton singled in the bottom of the fourth and advanced to second on a fly out from McCuistion. Camarero was able to get on base due to an error, and that was enough to plate the speedy Rushton from second base and extend the Wildcat lead to 6-0.

The top of the fifth came and went as many did. Henderson was dealing and struck out two more hitters to give her nine strikeouts for the game, and the Cats went to their half of the inning with an opportunity to run rule their Mountain West Conference opponent.

Lauren Hoe led the inning off with a first-pitch single to left field, followed by a Whiting single to put two Cats on with no outs. A passed ball allowed the runners to each move up a base, then a Gianna Memoli sacrifice fly scored the runner from third. The decisive and historic moment came one batter later when Mika Chong, a pinch hitter, came in and sent a single up the middle to score Whiting from third to make it 8-0 and enforce a run-rule victory for the Cats.

Although the victory set a new milestone for Wildcat softball, Head Coach Mary Kay Amicone was quick to remind that this team is grounded and has bigger goals in sight. "We're just focused on getting better. We don't pay much attention to those kinds of things. We acknowledge it and it's about us getting better on a day-to-day basis. That's icing on the cake, but we play to be better at the end of the year."

Regarding Henderson's terrific outing, a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts, Amicone added, "She was ready to go. She had her best stuff going. I'm really happy for her to come out and throw with confidence and command."

The Wildcats (13-2), close out another undefeated weekend and will start preparations for one of the toughest stretches of play in recent memory. When the future schedule, including a weekend tournament against the likes of Texas A&M, UCLA, and Cal State Fullerton was brought up, Amicone stated, "We're playing with that confidence that we will need for the next couple of weeks. We're playing Weber State softball. I'm really happy and excited for what lies ahead."
