Wildcats Drop a Heartbreaker to Aggies in Logan

3/29/2022 10:07:00 PM | Softball

LOGAN, Utah – In an instant classic that lasted over three hours, the Weber State Wildcat softball team dropped a heartbreaker to the Utah State Aggies by a score of 11-10.

The Wildcats jumped out to a short-lived lead in the top of the first inning when a McKell McCuistion fly ball to the outfield drove in Marissa Cerda from third base. The Aggies answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the ball game up.

The bats stayed quiet until the fifth inning when things started getting crazy.

The topsy-turvy inning started with a single from Katelyn Whiting who moved on to second base when Daisy Taloa sent a bouncing ball into the outfield. Faith Hoe stepped in and got a base knock to drive Whiting in and give the Cats a 2-1 lead. When Arissa Henderson walked, the bases were loaded for the red-hot bat of McKell McCuistion, who powered a grand slam over the wall and change the score to 6-1.

Utah State used some pass-the-baton type scoring to respond with six runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth and retook the lead at 7-6.

Whiting reached base on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth, and with two outs Makayla Donahoo hit a line drive to the outfield that moved Whiting to third. Mary Kay Amicone went to the bench and summoned true freshman Mika Chong to pinch hit. The first pitch to Chong got past the catcher and scored Whiting from third to tie the game.
The next pitch: lofted into the Logan sky to give Chong her first career home run and give the Cats a 9-7 lead.

The Aggies closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their own. The score was 9-8 heading to the final inning.

With a runner on second base and two outs, 2021 Big Sky Player of the Year Lauren Hoe came up clutch getting an RBI single to finish WSU's scoring for the day with 10 runs.
Weber State recorded a quick out, but the USU bats got hot. A pair of singles and a double scored a run and another runner was thrown out at the plate to preserve a one run lead with two outs, but the Aggies walked it off with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to steal the game from WSU.

With the loss, Weber State drops to 22-8 on the season and are slated to start Big Sky Conference play this weekend.
