Wildcats Clinch Series with Another Run-Ruling

4/23/2022 3:14:00 PM | Softball

GREELEY, Colo. – After splitting the series opening doubleheader on Friday, Weber State stormed into Greeley on Saturday and cruised away with a 10-1 victory in five innings to win the series against the Northern Colorado Bears.

For the second time this season the Wildcats were playing in winds that were reportedly over 40 miles per hour, but not even the blustery day could slow down the white-hot Wildcat bats.

The offense started rolling in the second inning when Katelyn Whiting punched the ball into the outfield for a single. Makayla Donahoo, the following batter, brought Whiting home on a double that was scorched onto the green grass of Gloria Rodriguez Field's outfield, and Weber State took a 1-0 lead. Faith Hoe then reached on an error and Donahoo advanced to third. Mika Chong stepped into the box and hit a hard ball towards short that the defense couldn't handle. Donahoo came home and the Cats had a 2-0 lead.

McKell McCuistion, who was absolutely unstoppable in Friday's doubleheader, joined in on the fun and sent a two-RBI single beyond the infield that scored Hoe and Chong, and the Cats took that 4-0 lead all the way to the fifth inning.

Things got started in the top of the fifth with a leadoff double down the line from Chong. McCuistion followed Chong's base hit with a single of her own, then Chloe Camarero brought home a runner on a bizarre bunt that made its way to the outfield and put the senior on second base. McCuistion came home to score on a passed ball, Camarero advanced to third and the Cats had a 6-0 lead.

Still in the fifth, Whiting doubled to a Bermuda triangle in the outfield to score Camarero. 7-0. Donahoo crushed her second double of the day that plated Whiting. 8-0. Following an Arissa Henderson walk to put two runners on, Faith Hoe peppered the wall with a two-out two-RBI double, the Wildcats' fourth double of the inning, to cap off WSU's scoring for the game at 10 runs.

In the bottom of the inning and the run-rule watch officially on, Northern Colorado scored one runner but it wouldn't be enough to extend the game. Henderson struck out the final batter to give the Wildcats a 10-1 win in five innings and to clinch the season series against the Bears.

The win improves Weber State's record to 32-10 (10-1).

QUOTABLES

"I'm really happy with their resilience. We really work hard because we can't control the elements. We knew it was going to be windy and we just fought like crazy. I applaud (our players) for that, that was awesome. Makayla and KC (Whiting) in the seven and eight spots have done a really good job of being productive in their at bats and that was a key to our success today, for sure." - Mary Kay Amicone
