Wildcats Win Two, Clinch Series Against Hornets

4/29/2022 8:41:00 PM | Softball

OGDEN, Utah – In a showdown between the two top teams in the Big Sky Conference, the Weber State Wildcat softball team won a pair of games over the Sacramento State Hornets by scores of 7-4 and 5-0 to extend its lead atop the conference standings.

Starting out the biggest series of the season in the first game on Friday, the Cats didn't way long to grab a lead. Faith Hoe led the game off with a double to deep to the outfield and was driven home two batters later when Chloe Camarero banged another double to the green grass at Wildcat Softball Field.

The offensive action continued in the bottom of the third when a Mika Chong double scored Faith Hoe to extend WSU's lead to 2-0. McKell McCuistion, who has been en fuego over the past few weeks, sent a screamer over the wall for her tenth bomb of the season to push the Wildcat lead to four runs. The Cats tacked one more on in the bottom of the fourth on a Faith Hoe sacrifice fly that scored Makayla Donahoo.

The top of the sixth was where things started getting dicey. The Hornets weren't planning on going down without a fight. Although Sacramento State is known for its power, it was through rally scoring that the Hornets put a four-spot up on the board in the sixth. Five singles and four runs in the inning and all of the sudden it was just a one-run ball game.

WSU got some clutch hitting from one of its leaders in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and runners on first and second, Faith Hoe stepped in and delivered in the clutch with a two-RBI single to make it 7-4.

Arissa Henderson closed the game out in style with a three-up-three-down inning, and Weber State took game one of the Friday's double header.

The scoring wouldn't get started until the second inning in the second game. Katelyn Whiting delivered when she singled with one out in the inning to score a runner from third base. Weber State took a 1-0 lead.

The Cats didn't get back on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fourth. A Mia Rushton triple scored Donahoo, then Faith Hoe brought Rushton to the plate on a sacrifice to give WSU a three-run advantage. After Noelle Foster singled with two gone in the inning, Camarero singled to the outfield, but some savvy baserunning from Foster and Camarero ended up plating Foster with Camarero advancing all the way to third base. The senior come home to score on a wild pitch and cap off the Wildcats' scoring at 5-0.

Weber State had a vintage performance from Mariah Ramirez, WSU's starter in the circle for game two. The Hornets, one of the most potent and powerful offenses in the Big Sky Conference, were stifled against Ramirez's artistry in the circle. Going the full 7.0 innings, Ramirez only allowed three hits, one walk, and struck out six Hornets as the Cats shut out Sacramento State to clinch the season series.

The two wins put Weber State at 34-10 (12-1) on the season.

-Ramirez's win puts her personal record at 10-8.

QUOTABLES

"I was just feeling really good and having fun out there, doing what I do and trusting myself. I wasn't overthinking anything and that's what made me successful. Hitting my spots and keeping it low, that's what I did. I'm super excited and so proud of this team for what they've accomplished with everything." – Mariah Ramirez

"The last time we saw Sac State our season ended. That was a very, very bitter taste in our mouth. It was a very big series. It's not a rivalry but it's really big competition, especially with these being in first and second place. We made sure to calm down and play Weber State softball. It's awesome to win the series, but it's all about the tournament." – Chloe Camarero
