Wildcats Run Rule Bengals, Advance in Big Sky Tournament

5/11/2022 7:30:00 PM | Softball

OGDEN, Utah – After a record-setting season in which the Weber State Wildcat softball team won the conference regular-season title, WSU opened its Big Sky Conference tournament action with a 10-0 run-rule victory over the Idaho State Bengals in five innings.

Score early and score often seemed to be a theme for the Wildcats on Wednesday. In the bottom of the first inning with Faith Hoe on third base, First Team All-Conference selection Chloe Camarero stepped up to the plate and muscled the ball over the wall to give the Cats a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning with Wildcats on second and third base, Mia Rushton reached base on an error to score a runner and make it 3-0 for WSU. Faith Hoe followed that by reaching on another error, and then Wildcat fans in attendance were treated to another special moment at Wildcat Softball Field.

With a destruction of Wildcats loading the bases, Arissa Henderson, Wednesday's starting pitcher and the 2022 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year, obliterated the softball for a no-doubt grand slam. Weber State extended its edge to 7-0.

With a large lead heading to the bottom of the third, Lauren Hoe led things off with a double to the gap and scored one batter later on an Emily Ruhl single to the outfield. Ruhl advanced to third on a double by Katelyn Whiting, and both runners scored with Faith Hoe slapped a single to the green grass at Wildcat Softball Field. The Cats topped off their scoring for the day at 10-0.

Henderson and the elite Wildcat defense locked things down through the top of the fifth, and the Wildcats advance in the Big Sky Conference tournament winner's bracket with a run-rule shutout of the Bengals in five innings.

Weber State improves to 36-10 (13-1) in the historic 2022 season.

QUOTABLES

"I'm just excited for my team to come out and play loose, continue to get better. That's what we need to do throughout the tournament. It's about being consistent, and we showed that early and kept working at it. Tremendous outing. I've said all year long that (Henderson) is a tremendous competitor. I just love watching her do her thing." – Mary Kay Amcione

"It's exciting to put up a lot of runs early and just keep it on. We have a full team, it's not just one person doing it, it's everyone. Especially after last year and not doing well in the tournament, this is really big for us to come out and be resilient." – Arissa Henderson
