Wildcats Pull Away from Aggies for Match Play Win

OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State men's golf team went undefeated in singles play to pull away from Utah State to claim an 11.5 to 4.5 win over the Aggies in the Weber State-Utah State Cup on Tuesday at the Ogden Golf & Country Club.
"This is a really fun way to get our year started," said WSU head coach Scott Erling. "It's great competition with Utah State and it's a format that we don't ever get to play, so that makes it a lot of fun for the kids. I couldn't be prouder for the way they battled. It was really close after yesterday and we had a lot of close matches today, but they were able to come through in the end and get us a win."
On Monday, the Wildcats jumped out to a 3-1 lead with victories in three of the four morning four-ball matches. Brody Childs and Isaac Buerger teamed to defeat John Cook and Julio Sanchez; Brendan Thomas and Oliver Gothe took down Cameron Tucker and Nathan Preslar; and Gunnar Knutson and Ty Anderson earned a win over Josh Pehrson and Luis Cantu.
In Monday afternoon's foursomes, the Aggies flipped the script, earning a pair of wins to take a 2.5 to 1.5 edge in the session. Hayden Banz and Cameron Gray, the lone Wildcat duo to not win in the morning, earned WSU's only full point of the afternoon with a win over Javier Vazquez and Esteban Jaramillo. Knutson and Anderson earned a half point after matching Preslar and Sanchez over 18 holes. The Aggies closed the gap to one point in the session, with the Wildcats owning a 4.5 to 3.5 edge after the opening day.
On Tuesday, the Wildcats saw Banz, Gray, Gothe, Childs, Thomas and Buerger each earn full points, while Knutson and Anderson earned halves to push the score to the final seven point margin.
"There is a ton of emotion (in match play)," said Erling. "There's the ebbs and the flows, and you get up and you get down. I thought the guys did a great job of kind of staying even keel and kept plugging away. When they were down, they didn't worry about it, and when they were up, they kept going. We were really fortunate to come out on top. Utah State's a great team, but couldn't be prouder of the guys."
