Wildcats drop Homecoming game 17-16 to UC Davis

OGDEN - Weber State dropped a tough Homecoming game 17-16 to UC Davis Saturday night at Stewart Stadium.
The Wildcats trailed 14-3 early in the second quarter. Late in the second quarter, Mayson Hitchens blocked and recovered a UC Davis punt that gave the Wildcats the ball on the 15-yard line.
On the next play, Kris Jackson scored a 15-yard reception to make it 14-10 at halftime.
The Wildcats held the Aggies to just three points in the second half. Kyle Thompson made a 51-yard field goal with 7:41 to play in the third quarter that made it 14-13. UC Davis made a 43-yard field goal late in the third quarter to make it 17-13.
Thompson made his third field goal, this one from 30 yards, with 7:37 to play, but the Wildcats were unable to score again.
UC Davis totaled 294 yards, compared to 275 for the Wildcats. WSU had 116 yards rushing and 159 yards passing.
"I loved the fight from our guys and loved how they competed," said WSU head coach Mickey Mental. "We just have to do a little more offensively to push that needle across but I loved the effort. We have to stick together as a team and things will fall our way."
Mental made a change at quarterback to start the game as true freshman Richie Munoz started the game and played for the first time. Munoz was 15 of 30 for 138 yards and a touchdown in his debut. Creyton Cooper also saw action at quarterback and had seven carries for 18 yards.
Senior Kris Jackson had 12 carries for 59 yards to lead the rushing game. Treyshun Hurry and Tajon Evans each had three receptions for 36 yards.
Defensively, Garrett Beck had nine tackles to lead the way with Winston Reid adding seven tackles. Brayden Wilson had 1.5 tackles for loss and five total tackles.
The Wildcats are now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Big Sky play. Weber State closes out the regular season with three of the last four games on the road starting at Eastern Washington next Saturday at 5 p.m. Mountain time.
