Wildcats Struggle in the Desert, Fall to Rebels

2/12/2023 3:18:00 PM | Softball

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Weber State softball closed out the 2023 Rebel Kickoff Classic with a 12-4 loss to the UNLV Rebels.

The Wildcat bats started out hot at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas. Faith Hoe and McKell McCuistion led the game off with back-to-back singles, and each moved up a base on a Mika Chong groundout, which brought the 2021 Big Sky Conference MVP and Sunday's cleanup hitter Lauren Hoe, who cracked the ball over the fence and into the palm trees surrounding UNLV's stadium to give WSU a 3-0 lead.

Weber State found itself in a jam in the first inning. With one out and the bases full of Rebels, Head Coach Mary Kay Amicone went to the bench to make a change and bring in Madison Peterson. With her back against the wall and no room for a mistake, Peterson brought her best stuff and struck out back-to-back Rebels and escape the inning without conceding a run.

Faith Hoe got her second hit of the day in the third inning on a double to start the frame. She came around third to score on a single by McCuistion which gave the Wildcats a 4-0 advantage.

Both teams put up zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth when three Rebels crossed home plate which cut the Wildcat lead to just one run. Things started to unravel for the Wildcats in the bottom of the sixth when UNLV scored nine runs to give them the late lead that would carry the Rebels to victory.

Weber State wraps up its season opening tournament with a 1-4 record.

NOTABLES
-Peterson was the pitcher of record. Her final line read: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO.
-Lauren Hoe hit her second home run of the year and the 24th of her career.
-Faith Hoe and McCuistion had two hits each to lead the Wildcats.
-Weber State totaled eight base hits and four walks.
