Wildcats sweep doubleheader against Hornets

Ogden, UT - The Wildcat softball team swept the Sacramento State Hornets on day one of a three-game series at the Wildcat Softball Field.

Game One - Weber State 5, Sacramento State 0

With one Hornet on third and two outs on the board, Brooke Hatfield struck out Caroline Evans in the top of the second and shut down hope for an early run.
It was the Wildcats in the second inning as two runs were found. One off of a Makayla Donahoo double and another from a Gianna Memoli single.
With two strikes on the board, and looking to add an additional run, Mia Rushton was up to bat with Memoli on third. Unfortunately, Rushton grounded out and the Hornets were back at bat.
More action came for Weber State in the sixth inning when Eva Richardson advanced Riley Whalen to second on a sacrifice bunt.
With two strikes recorded, Taegan Smith was up at bat. The sophomore smacked the ball to left field and totaled two RBI and a triple.
The score was now 5-0 for the 'Cats.
Brooke Hatfield and the Wildcat defense kept Sacramento State scoreless and Weber State went on to earn the victory 5-0 in the first game of the day.
Hatfield pitched a complete game and improved to 3-4. She struck out three of the Hornets during the afternoon game.
Taegan Smith went 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBI. Mariyah Delgado had 12 putouts for WSU.

Game Two - Weber State 8, Sacramento State 0 (5)

Bases were loaded in the bottom of the first for Weber State. With Taegan Smith up at bat, she cracked a ball to left center for a two RBI double to put WSU on the board in the second game of the day, 2-0.
With runners in scoring position for the Wildcats, Kiaira Smith smacked the ball to left field to bring in two RBI and get herself on second base. The hit increased the Wildcats lead to 4-0.
Weber State wasn't finished yet in the fourth inning. Abby Grundy doubled to left field and Emma Bingham found home plate to add an additional run for the 'Cats.
It was quick in the top of the fifth inning with three up and three down for the Hornets to place the Wildcats back at bat.
Looking to close out the game in the bottom of the fifth, Weber State's Eva Richardson singled to right field allowing Olivia Birkinshaw to find home.
Kiaira Smith scored on a wild pitch and to close out the game, Grundy with the walk off RBI secured the win 8-0 in five innings and swept day one of the three-game series.
Weber State held Sacramento State scoreless for two complete games.
Cali McCraw pitched a complete game with two strikeouts.
Grundy had a phenomenal game going 4 for 4 at the plate with one run and two RBI.
Kiaira Smith went 4 for 4 with two runs and two RBI.

"I'm proud of our team. We did a lot of little things well today. Offensively, we hit throughout the lineup and Abby, Kiaira, Taegan, and Mak were good at producing runs."

COMING UP
The Wildcats return to the diamond April 20 for a single game against the Sacramento State Hornets to close out the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for noon. We will celebrate our three seniors and the retirement of Coach Amicone.
