Weber State tops Vikings on day one of series in Portland

Portland, OR - The Weber State softball team defeated the Portland State Vikings 4-2 in the first game of the day and 7-2 in the second after totaling six runs in the seventh inning. The Wildcats improve 5-0 in Big Sky play.
 
Game One | Weber State: 4, Portland State: 2
  • Scoring started early with Weber State getting on the board in the bottom of the first. The Wildcats went up 1-0 after scoring on a throwing error made by the Vikings.
  • Taking back the advantage, Portland State found two runs in the second inning off of two walks with bases loaded. 
  • To tie up the game, Makayla Donahoo scored on a wild pitch.
  • Taegan Smith found home plate off of a Gianna Memoli single to earn back the lead for the Wildcats (3-2).
  • Weber State found one more run in the top of the fifth inning unearned by Mia Rushton.
  • Tough defense held the Vikings scoreless throughout the remainder of the game and Weber State closed it out 4-2.
  • Taegan Smith went 2-for-2 at the plate and had one run.
  • Brooke Hatfield pitched a complete game and took the win for Weber State. She improved to 2-3 on the season. Hatfield had one strikeout in the afternoon. 
 Game Two | Weber State: 7, Portland State: 2
  • Quickly getting on the board, a Mia Rushton home run, the first of her college career, put Weber State up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
  • The Vikings struck back in the fifth inning off of a Lorraine Alo double to bring in two RBI. PSU led 2-1.
  • With runners on second and third, Tori Rey crushed the ball on a single to the pitcher allowing Sienna Solis to bring in a run.
  • The score was now tied at 2-2. 
  • With two outs, Weber State was looking to take the lead over the Vikings. 
  • Great offense did just that for the Wildcats. Rushton singled to advance Rey and Taegan Smith home.
  • Kiaira Smith hit her fifth home run of the season and brought Rushton home in the process, the 'Cats were up 6-2.
  • Abby Grundy then doubled to center field and Eva Richardson scored giving the Wildcats their seventh and final run of the evening.
  • From then on it was all the Wildcats, it was three up and three down for the Vikings in the bottom of the seventh and Weber State went on to win the second game of the day 7-2.
  • Cali McCraw pitched a complete game and recorded three strikeouts. She improves to 5-1 on the season. 
  • Rushton hit her first career home run. She went 2-for-4 at the plate, totaled two runs and three RBI.
  • Kiaira Smith hit her fifth home run of the season. She went 2-for-4 and recorded two RBI.

"I'm proud of our fight and resilience today. Brooke Hatfield gave us everything she had for the win in the first game. Taegan, Kiaira, and Mia all had good approaches at the plate."

"In our second game, Cali and Eva were outstanding. We had a great seventh inning. Tori was clutch in turning the lineup over. It was a great day overall."

COMING UP
The Wildcats return to the diamond Saturday, April 6 for a single game against the Vikings with first pitch at 12 p.m.
