Wildcats drop two on day one of the Lyman Classic Tournament

ST. GEORGE - The Wildcat softball team opened up day one of the Lyman Classic Tournament hosted by Utah Tech with an 11-10 loss to the Utah State Aggies and an 8-4 loss to the San Diego Toreros. 

Weber State 10, Utah State 11
  • First on the board, Weber State put up four runs early in the bottom of the first. 
  • Kiaira Smith and Eva Richardson each totaled one RBI, while Sadie Kirk totaled two. 
  • Utah State slowly advanced to take the lead, earning solo runs in the second and third innings, then tacking on two more in the fourth to tie the score at 4-4. 
  • Another four runs came in the fifth inning for the Aggies, and an additional three in the top of the seventh. 
  • The Wildcats battled in the bottom of the seventh. Richardson singled to left center field, allowing Gianna Memoli to cross home plate. 
  • Jordan Hart earned her second RBI of the season off a single to right field. Whalen doubled to right field for two RBIs, bringing the 'Cats to within one, with the score at 11-10. 
  • With two outs, Taegan Smith flew out to center field and the game ended in favor of the Aggies. 
  • RJ Parra took the loss for the Wildcats, pitching 3.0 innings. 
  • Whalen led the team, going 2-for-4 at the plate and totaling two runs and RBIs.
Weber State 4, San Diego 8
  • On the board first was San Diego. The Toreros recorded one run in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • Weber State responded in the top of the second off a Jordan Hart bunt.
  • The Toreros regained the lead in the bottom of the third  with two runs and put them ahead 3-1. 
  • The Wildcats tacked on another run in the fifth inning thanks to a Whalen single to right field.
  • San Diego continued to maintain separation bringing the score to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Olivia Birkinshaw hit a home run to left field adding two more runs for the 'Cats. 
  • Weber State had chances in the sixth and seventh innings totaling a combined six hits however, it was not enough and the Toreros took down the Wildcats 8-4.
  • Raina Navarro took the loss, her second of the season.
  • Whalen went 2-for-4 at the plate and brought in one RBI.
  • Birkinshaw went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
  • Apollonia Maldonado finished the game with four putouts.
