FULLERTON, Calif. -  Weber State softball opened a five-game stint at the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic upsetting No. 23 San Diego State 7-6 in nine innings then falling 13-3 in five innings to the No. 10 ranked Arizona Wildcats. 

Weber State 7, No. 23 San Diego State 6 (9 Inn.)
  • In the afternoon slate, No. 23 San Diego State hit a home run to left field, tacking on the first run of the game.
  • Responding in the bottom of the second, Olivia Birkinshaw hit the fifth home run of her career to tie it up at 1-1. 
  • San Diego State regained the lead with two more runs early in the top of the fourth.
  • The Wildcats were able to tie the score 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning. 
  • Abby Grundy singled up the middle and advanced to second, allowing Sadie Kirk to run home. Birkinshaw then advanced home off of a fielder's choice and Eva Richardson singled up the middle to bring home Grundy. 
  • With two runners on base and two outs, Riley Whalen grounded out and closed out the inning. 
  • Pitching in the fifth inning, Cali McCraw kept it scoreless for San Diego State as she recorded two strikeouts. 
  • Both teams remained scoreless through the seventh and were pushed to extra innings until a San Diego State single up the middle advanced them to five in the top of the eighth and a fly out to left field brought home one more.
  • The Wildcats came in hot in the bottom of the eighth as Kiaira Smith singled to left field, allowing Sienna Soils to find home plate and advance the score 5-6. 
  • With bases loaded and two outs, Jordan McMahon singled to third base and Mariyah Delgado scored unearned. The 'Cats tied the score 6-6 and the game continued into the ninth inning. 
  • Weber State took the game 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth off of a Sadie Kirk walk off to upset the No. 23 San Diego Aztecs. 
  • Six Wildcats recorded hits, with Kirk going 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI.
  • Joslynn Veltien and McCraw split time in the circle for WSU. Veltien started and threw 4.0 innings while facing 18 batters, before McCraw took over for the final 5.0 innings to earn the win facing 20 batters and recording three strikeouts. 
Weber State 3, #10 Arizona 13 (5 Inn.)
  • In the evening matchup, Arizona quickly gathered four runs in the first inning and then five in the second. 
  • Tacking on four more runs after the top of the fifth, Arizona led 13-0. 
  • Weber State secured three runs in the bottom of the fifth off an Apple Maldonado double for two RBI and a Birkinshaw single to left field, however, it was not enough and the Arizona Wildcats secured the win 13-3 in five innings. 
  • Weber State totaled six hits. 
  • Jayci Finch took the loss, dropping 1-4 on the season.
