Wildcats drop two to San Diego in home opener

OGDEN - Weber State softball dropped two on their home series opener against San Diego this Friday afternoon. The Toreros took game one 7-2 and then game two 8-5. 

GAME ONE
Weber State 2, San Diego 7


Pitcher Cali McCraw got the Wildcats off to a good start with two strikeouts in the top of the first inning. 

The Wildcats then struck first off an Eva Richardson single to left field to bring Jordan McMahon home. 

With two outs and two on base in the top of the third, the Toreros Michelle Delgado doubled to left field to tie the score 1-1. San Diego had a chance to take the lead with runners on second and third but a pop up caught by Sienna Solis retired the side. 

In the fourth for the 'Cats, WSU had runners on first and second. Emma Bingham hit a single advancing both Kiaira Smith and Solis however, a bobbled ball by the Toreros then allowed Kiaira Smith to run home and the Wildcats advanced the score 2-1. 

The Toreros scored unearned in the top of the fifth before a three run home run came and San Diego extended their lead 5-2. 

Extending the advantage at 7-2, another San Diego home run in the seventh inning closed out the game as the Wildcats remained scoreless in the bottom of the seventh. 

Riley Whalen went 2-for-4 at bat and Jordan McMahon went 1-for-3 with one run. McCraw took the game one loss (3-4) pitching five innings and facing 26 batters. Weber State totaled 10 hits to San Diego's seven. 

GAME TWO
Weber State 5, San Diego 8


Weber State started game two strong as Grundy tripled to right field for an RBI in the first inning. Not long after, a Jordan Hart single brought home two RBI. 

San Diego got on the board in the second inning off a fly out to left field by Mikalyn Emanuelli for an RBI. 

The Wildcats responded in the second when Tori Rey singled to center field to increase the lead 4-1. 

Tying the game 4-4, the Toreros tripled for an RBI and then singled in the top of the fourth. However, finished there the Toreros tacked on two more runs to make it a 6-4 game. 

Weber State battled at the two run deficit. In the bottom of the fifth Kiaira Smith doubled putting her in scoring position. Jordan Hart then singled to bring home Smith and the Wildcats were down by just one. 

San Diego totaled two runs in the sixth to go up 8-5. Unable to get one around in the bottom of the sixth or seventh, the Toreros went on to win the second game. 

Raina Navarro took the loss (2-3). San Diego totaled 17 hits while Weber State recorded eight.

The Wildcats will close out the weekend with a single matchup against the Toreros on Saturday, March 22. First pitch is scheduled for noon and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
