‘Cats close non-conference play with win over Gauchos

Santa Barbara, CA - The Weber State Wildcats women's soccer team defeated UC Santa Barbara 2-0 on Sunday to close their preseason slate with a 6-4 record.
The Wildcats attacked the UCSB defensive line all day, outshooting the Gauchos 18-6, with a 5-1 advantage in shots on frame. They also took 6 more corners than the Gauchos, with a 7-1 advantage in the stat.
Sammie Sofonia and Grace Kirby both had shots blocked or saved in the early goings. Sofonia's shot missed wide in the 9th minute, while Kirby's shot was saved in the 12th minute.
In the 27th minute, Oakley Anderson set up Presley Ray with a pass on the right side of the box. Ray took advantage of the space and sent a shot cross-goal and into the left side to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead in the first half.
It was the 3rd goal of the season for the Utah State transfer while Anderson picked up her first assist of the season for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats had more opportunities in the first half to push the lead, but were unable to capitalize. Sayler Schlosser had a shot saved in the 30th minute, and Brynlee Meyerhoffer sent a volley over the goal in the 41st.
Meyerhoffer was able to find paydirt late in the 2nd half, however, putting a header into the back of the net off assists by Harlee Thomas and Emery Jacobs.The goal was Meyerhoffer's 3rd of her senior campaign and the 6th of her career.
The Gauchos came into Sunday as one of the hottest teams in the country with an 8-1-1 mark and winners of their last 7 in a row.
The win gives the 'Cats a record of 6-4 in non-conference play on the season as they will open Big Sky Conference play on Thursday.
This is the first time that the Wildcats have had at least 6 wins before conference play begins since 1997. That team finished the season with a 16-5-1 record before falling in the 2nd round of the Big Sky Conference Tournament, 4-2 to Montana.
Next up for the Wildcats is the Big Sky opener on Thursday, September 25th. The match will kick off at 6:00 p.m. against the Eastern Washington Eagles at the Wildcat Soccer Field.
The game will be Alumni Night as the Wildcat soccer program will welcome home alumni and honor them with a special halftime ceremony.
