Weber State drops two at Kickoff Classic

PHOENIX, Arizona - Weber State softball 8-3 to the Santa Clara Broncos and 6-3 to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on day two of the Kickoff Classic.Â
Game One: Weber State 3, Santa Clara 8
To begin day two of the Kickoff Classic, Weber State was off to a hot start as the Wildcats totaled three runs.Â
In the bottom of the second, three Wildcats advanced on a wild pitch, which allowed Cailin Quinney to earn her first collegiate run.Â
Not long after, Kiaira Smith hit a two-RBI double and making the score 3-1.Â
The Broncos mounted a comeback in the top of the fourth inning, scoring six runs to take a 7-3 lead. The scoring rally included a two-run home run, a sacrifice fly, and two RBI singles.
The Wildcats recorded four hits in the final five innings but could not generate any runs. Santa Clara went on the secure the game 8-3.Â
Raina Navarro was credited with the loss, though three pitchers saw action in the circle. Offensively, Kiaira Smith led the Wildcats, going 1-for-2 and driving in two runs.
Game Two: Weber State 3, Southern Utah 6

Weber State dropped its second game of the day, 6-3, to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.Â
SUU was quick to start, totaling three runs in the first inning.Â
In the top of the second inning, Weber State scored its first run when Attiana Thompson singled to second base, enabling Mariyah Delgado to score unearned.Â
The Wildcats scored two additional runs in the third inning, thanks to RBI singles delivered by Delgado and Sammy Gallegos.
The 3-3 tie was broken in the sixth inning when the Thunderbirds scored three additional runs, securing a 6-3 victory.
RJ Parra was credited with the loss, facing 22 batters and recording one strikeout.Â
