OGDEN – For 12 minutes, everything went right for the Wildcats, and then everything went wrong.
Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead just minutes into the match, the Weber State University women's soccer team suffered a disheartening 3-2 loss to Idaho on Friday night at Wildcat Soccer Field.
Junior forward Morgan Quarnberg, the Big Sky's goal scoring leader in conference play, opened the scoring for the Wildcats, racing onto a chip attempt from junior midfielder Madison Garlock that skipped off an Idaho defender's head, and booting it past the Vandals' goalkeeper in the 11th minute for a 1-0 lead.
It's the fourth straight match, and fifth in six outings, that Quarnberg has scored in for the Wildcats, giving her a Big Sky-best six goals in league play and seven for the season overall.
Just two minutes later, the Wildcats doubled up their lead when senior Kelsi Jones latched onto a failed Vandals clearance after a corner kick and crossed it into the box where freshman midfielder Sadie Newsom smashed it home with her head for the 2-0 lead. It was Newsom's first goal of her career.
Idaho cut the deficit to 2-1 on the first goal of what would become a hat trick from Bridget Daley in the 22nd minute. After a shot into the box was knocked around several times, Daley punched it in from short range.
The Vandals scored the equalizer in the 57th minute after a controversial penalty decision sent Daley to the spot, and she converted to make it 2-2.
With time winding down, Daley scored the match-winner in the 86th minute after a Wildcat turnover at midfield led to a 2-on-1 break.
Weber State (2-4-2 Big Sky, 3-11-2 overall) will wrap up the home portion of its season against Eastern Washington on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Wildcat Soccer Field. The Eagles are coming off a 4-2 decision against Idaho State that clinched the 2017 Big Sky Conference regular season title, and have won seven straight games since a conference-opening home draw with Sacramento State.
The Wildcats will honor three seniors prior to the match, Jones, goalkeeper Sydnie Brough, and forward Celeste Anderson.
