OGDEN – The Wildcats put up a valiant fight against the Big Sky's regular season champion, but came up just short in the final minutes.
Senior forward Chloe Williams scored twice in the final 30 minutes as Eastern Washington rallied to defeat the Weber State University women's soccer team 2-1 in Big Sky Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
The Wildcats fell to 2-5-2 in Big Sky play (3-12-2 overall) and were eliminated from the Big Sky's postseason race with the loss.
The match started out well enough for the Wildcats, who jumped out to a 1-0 lead on junior forward Morgan Quarnberg's Big Sky Conference-leading seventh goal of league play in the 32nd minute.
Junior midfielder Madison Garlock, who leads the Big Sky in assists in conference play with four, cut into the center of the field and chipped the ball over the Eagles defense, setting up Quarnberg for a perfect run onto the ball just outside the box, and Quarnberg blasted her right-to-left shot around the Eagles' goalkeeper for the first-half lead.
It's the fifth straight match that Quarnberg has scored in, and the sixth time in seven matches that she has found the back of the net, and her eight goals is now tied for the 10th most in a season in Weber State history.
Eastern Washington (8-0-1 Big Sky, 14-4-1 overall) tied the match in the 62nd minute after Savannah Hoekstra crossed the ball from the left wing to Williams in a 2-on-1 situation, and Williams converted to level things at 1-1.
The Eagles punched in the match-winner in the 80th minute after a set piece from Aimie Inthoulay found Williams for an angled shot inside the box to make it 2-1.
The match was the final home match for the Wildcats three seniors, forward Celeste Anderson, midfielder Kelsi Jones, and goalkeeper Sydnie Brough, all of whom started.
Weber State will wrap up its 2017 season on Friday afternoon against Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho. Kickoff will be 4 p.m. at Davis Field.
