Weber State splits opening day of Big Sky play vs. SUU

In the first game, Weber State started things off in the top of the first inning by loading the bases. Ashlyn Visser steps up to the plate and knocks it out of the park for a grand slam. With one swing of the bat, the Wildcats had a 4-0 jump on Southern Utah.
The Thunderbirds hit a homerun to center field in the bottom of the second for their lone point of the game.
In the fourth inning the Weber State bats were hot. Ali Belloc started things off with a single to right field and was able to advance to second off a bunt by Sydney White. Takesha Saltern then rocked one over the center field fence for her first collegiate homer.
Landi Hawker then got on off a walk and McKinley Brinkerhoff drove her home with another homerun to right center. By the end of the fourth inning, Weber State had scored five more runs and had taken a 10-1 lead over Southern Utah.
To finish off the first game, WSU was able to bring two more runs in thanks to a double by Molly Horne. The Wildcats came out of the first game with a 12-1 victory.
Kirtlyn Bohling was in the circle that first game and gave up only three hits and one run. She had five strikeouts and didn't walk a single batter. Bohling now has a 5-5 record on the season.
In the second game WSU started out slow going scoreless the first three innings. In the bottom of the third Southern Utah drove nine across home plate with the help of a T-Bird grand slam and an additional homerun.
In the top of the fourth inning, McKinley Brinkerhoff hit her second home run of the day over center field for two RBI. The top of the fifth inning Weber State capitalized on some strong momentum. WSU got two runners on base and with ducks on the pond Visser hit her second home run of the day scoring three runs for WSU.
Rae Gall saw Visser's home run and decided to match it as she rocked one over left field. Later, thanks to a Belloc double, Weber State was able to get five across in the fifth inning.
SUU didn't back down and continued to drive throughout the rest of the game and ultimately claimed the second game 13-7.
Overall, WSU had a total of six homers on the day, three doubles that contributed to a total of 19 hits. The Wildcats finished the day hitting .345 and had a slug percentage of .727.
Gall, Horne and Sadie Blacker each finished the day with three hits.
Defensively the Wildcats finished with a fielding percentage of .936. Horne had a total of 10 putouts for the day's high.
Weber State is now 13-14 overall on the season and 1-1 in Big Sky play. Weber State will take on Southern Utah for the final game of the series at 11:00 a.m. in Cedar City. The Wildcats home opener is March 30-31 against Sacramento State.
