Weber State splits opening day at Texas Invitational

Weber State softball split the opening day of the Texas Invitational first by defeating North Dakota State 6-1 and then later falling to Duke 9-1. 

What head coach Mary Kay Amicone said: "We played a very good first game, with 14 hits and Kate pitched a great game. We have a lot to work on with our consistency of play. We're looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."

GAME ONE - 

How it happened: In the top of the first inning, North Dakota State was able to score one run to get on the board. 

In the bottom of the third, the Wildcats were able to retaliate. Courtney Pestka started things off with a single up the middle. Takesah Saltern followed that up with a single up the middle. With a sac bunt, Landi Hawker moved both runners into scoring position. Chloe Camarero then flied out to right field for an RBI. With one run on the board, two outs and a runner on third, Ashlyn Visser singled through the left side for an RBI. 

After three complete innings, WSU had a 2-1 lead over NDSU. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth for either team to put a run up and it happened to be the Wildcats. Hawker started the inning off with a single to third base. Visser singled up the middle for another RBI. After five innings, WSU led 3-1. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Weber State continued the offensive momentum. Mariah Ramirez started the inning off with a double down the right field line. McKell McCuistion followed that up with a single to left field. Pestak flied out to center field scoring Ramirez was forr an RBI. Camarero came up with a single to left center that was able to get two more across the plate before the inning closed out. 

WSU had a 6-1 lead going into the final inning of play. NDSU was able to get one run across the plate before WSU defense locked in and got three outs. 

Weber State walked away with a 6-1 win over North Dakota State. 

At the plate: Weber State scored six runs from 14 hits and had six RBIs. WSU didn't draw any walks and had just two strikeouts. WSU left seven runners on base. Takesha Saltern went 3-4 at the plate and scored two runs. Ashlyn Visser went 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Camarero had three RBIs for WSU. 

In the field: WSU had 21 putouts and 16 assists. Visser had nine putouts while Camarero had four assists. 

In the circle:  Mariah Ramirez started in the circle for Weber State pitching two innings. She gave up just one hit and one error. She faced 12 batters and had four walks. 

Kate Donaldson came into the circle and finished out the game pitching five innings and faced 22 batters. She gave up five hits, one run and one walk while striking out four batters. 

GAME TWO -

How it happened: Duke got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to a triple right out of the gates. Duke turned up and put up two more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. 

WSU finally got on the board in the top of the first thanks to a homerun by Courtney Pestka.  Duke went on for a big sixth inning and put up six runs. Duke had a 9-1 lead after six innings of play to end the game early. 

At the plate: Weber State scored one run from 20 at bats with five hits and one RBI. WSU drew just one walk and had three strikeouts. Visser went 1-2 at the plate. Pestka also went 1-2 at the plate and had one RBI thanks to her bomb. 

In the field: WSU had 14 putouts and five assists. Ashlyn Visser had six putouts and Faith Hoe had seven assists. 

In the circle:  Mariah Ramirez pitched four innings for WSU and faced 18 batters. She gave up four hits, five runs and two walks. She did come away with two strikeouts. 

Amanda Sink came in to close out and pitched 0.2 innings and faced eight batters. She gave up three hits, four runs and one walk. 

Notes to know:  Weber State has a 4-7 overall record now on the season and snapped a seven game losing streak with the NDSU win. Courtney Pestka now has two home runs on the season and Mariah Ramirez is at 24 strikeouts. 

Up Next: Weber State will take on North Dakota State again tomorrow as well as Lipscomb before taking on tournament host No. 4 Texas.
