Wildcats Open Big Sky Play with Pair of Wins

3/27/2021 7:30:00 PM | Softball

OGDEN – Weber State opened up the Big Sky season in fine fashion on Saturday, sweeping the opening doubleheader of a three-game series at Wildcat Softball Field. The Wildcats opened the day with an 8-6 win before exploding offensively for a 19-0 win in the second game.

In the opener, the Bengals scored first, notching an unearned run in the top of the second inning. The Wildcats responded offensively, though twice in the bottom half and six more times over the next three frames to grab an 8-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Mariah Ramirez tripled and Lauren Hoe doubled to do the damage as the Wildcats scored to take a 2-1 lead. In the third inning, Faith Hoe provided the firepower, launching a 3-run home run to right field to make the lead 5-1.

In the fourth, Chloe Camarero doubled to left to plate Mia Rushton and give the Wildcats a 6-1 edge, and in the fifth, Rushton tripled home a pair of runs. The Wildcats nearly ended the game on the 8-run rule twice as they threatened more runs in the inning, but the Bengals were able to keep the game alive.

Idaho State came to life in the top of the sixth, scoring five times to close the gap. Shea Perkins and Angelica Cano doubled back-to-back to provide some offense, but two Wildcat errors provided a great deal of self-inflicted damage to keep the Bengal rally alive.

Kate Donaldson, in relief of Ramirez, got Frankie Tago to ground into an inning-ending double play, and navigated another fielding error in the seventh to seal the win and pick up her second save of the season. Ramirez earned the win for the Wildcats in the game, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing only three earned runs as she improved to 7-4 on the season.

"Obviously we had a lot to learn in the first game," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "We came out strong, but then had a hiccup or two out there. Overall, I'm really happy with the resilience we showed in the second game. We took a much better approach to things. Kate and Mo (Ramirez) both threw the ball well, we just needed to clean things up behind them."

In the second game of the day, the Wildcats scored early and often, matching single-game team records with 19 hits and 19 runs.

"We really came back with a different focus in the second game," said Amicone. "When you hit the ball like that and make team adjustments, that's a big thing. We really hit the ball solid throughout the lineup. It's been a while coming, and it's fun to see."

Ashlyn Visser got the Wildcats on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, and Katelyn Whiting later scored on a wild pitch to put WSU ahead 2-0 after one inning of play.

In the second inning, Weber State did the bulk of the damage as they nearly batted around twice and put 10 runs on the scoreboard. Noelle Foster doubled home Lauren Hoe to start the rally, and Whiting singled home a run with the bases loaded to push the score to 4-0.

Chloe Camarero then provided the first big blow of the inning with a bases-clearing triple down the left field line, making it 7-0. Visser then singled home Camarero, and Faith Hoe followed with her second home run of the day, this time a shot to center field.

After Ramirez struck out for the first out of the inning, Lauren Hoe followed her twin sister with a nearly identical long ball over the center field fence, this one a solo shot to run the score to 11-0. The pair of home runs moved the season total for each of the sisters to a team-leading total of four.

A Whiting sacrifice fly later finalized the second inning onslaught by the Wildcats and the game went to the top of the third with a score of 12-0.

After the Wildcats scored twice more in the bottom of the third, Aliya Harmon doubled home a pair of runs to get things going again in the fifth. One batter later, Abigail Sagert blistered a line drive that cleared the left field wall for a two-run homer. After a pair of strikeouts, Rushton and Whiting tripled back-to-back to finish off the scoring in the game.

Kate Donaldson picked up where she left off in the first game, starting for the Wildcats in the circle, and tossing a three-hit, five-inning complete game shutout. She struck out two in the game and improved to 4-3 on the season with the win.

Ten different Wildcats posted a hit in the second game and eight different players drove in a run in the game as Weber State posted great at-bats throughout the lineup.

Rushton, who went 4-for-4 in the second game, finished the day with five total hits, and ran her consecutive hits streak into double digits at 11 straight games. She also scored four times on the day. Whiting, who saw a 6-game hitting streak come to an end in the opener, picked back up in the second game, going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and three RBI.

Visser went 5-for-7 on the day with two RBI, while Lauren Hoe went 4-for-6 on the day with a homer and two RBI. Faith Hoe, behind her pair of long balls, went 3-for-6 on the day and added five runs scored and five RBI. Camarero drove in four runs on the day, including three in the final game.

The same two teams will face off again in the series finale on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Wildcat Softball Field.
