Weber State softball opened up the Dixie State Tournament on Thursday by beating the Nevada Wolfpack 5-3, and the Dixie State Trailblazers 5-0.
Prior to Thursday's action, the Wildcats had been rolling having won six consecutive matchups prior to the Dixie State Tournament. The game against Nevada was WSU's third against a team from the Mountain West Conference, the prior two games were both Weber State wins against the UNLV Rebels.
The game started with Mariah Ramirez and her ever consistent pitching sat three players down on strikes in the top of the first.
Neither offense was able to muster any runs until the top of the third when the Pack scored on a two-out single to left field to go up 1-0.
The Cats answered back immediately with a three-run inning. Faith Hoe, the defending Big Sky Conference Player of the Week, laced a double to the gap in left-center to score Marissa Cerda. The following batter, Lauren Hoe, hit a sacrifice fly to score Chloe Camarero from third base to give WSU the lead. Ramirez grounded out to short, but it was enough to score Faith Hoe and make it a 3-1 ballgame for the Cats.
In the bottom of the fifth, it was once again Faith Hoe at the dish to do some damage by pulling a single into right field that scored Camarero from second. Following that, Ramirez reached on an error that would bring Faith Hoe home, and Weber State had a 5-1 advantage in the late innings.
Nevada wouldn't go down without a fight, however. In the top of the sixth, following a Nevada home run and an RBI single that cut the deficit to just two runs, WSU made a pitching change and put Arissa Henderson into the circle to close the game out. Henderson could hardly be touched in the remaining 1.1 innings, and only surrendered one hit to Nevada.
With Henderson in control, Weber State closed the game out with a final score of 5-3. Ramirez picked up the win (5-2), Camarero and Faith Hoe each went 2-2 with two runs.
The Cats squared off against in-state rival Dixie State shortly following the victory against Nevada.
After a Wildcat win in a 10-7 shootout in last week's game between the two schools, this game got off to a slow start.
Henderson was in the mound for the Wildcats and held Dixie State scoreless for three innings prior to being pulled for Amanda Sink . In those three innings, Henderson tossed three strikeouts and allowed four hits. Neither team scored any runs until a frantic fifth inning came around.
Mia Rushton started things off with a single, followed by another single from the lefty bat of McKell McCuistion. With the Wildcats running rampant on the base paths and trying to steal some bags, an error was committed by DSU's catcher that allowed Rushton to score and break the deadlock at 1-0.
With a runner on third and no outs, Camarero, who was tied for second in the nation in home runs prior to this weekend, got a little unconventional. Not only did she put the ball in play to score another runner, but the slugger came all the way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run to put the Cats up 3-0.
With a pair of Wildcats on base and still in the fifth, Dixie State's catcher committed another error that allowed both Cerda and Faith Hoe to score and cap off the scoring for the game at 5-0.
Sink came on and struck out four in 4.0 shutout innings to lock things down for Weber State and give it its eighth consecutive victory and improve to 10-2 on the season.
The Wildcats continue the Dixie State Tournament on Friday against Utah Valley and Winthrop. Both of those games will be broadcast on WAC Digital.
